From the cobblestones of Pioneer Square to Belltown’s crowded skyline, Andrew’s block-by-block tour through the 20-acre park demonstrates how this new landscape reflects community priorities. Indigenous food sovereignty advocate Valerie Segrest (Muckleshoot) drops by to share thoughts on placemaking and history. Valerie explains how the interpretive horticultural exhibit she designed for the new Overlook Walk invites visitors to gaze across the Salish Sea while learning about Native cultural ecosystems. These walkways, stairs and plazas connect the Seattle Aquarium’s new Ocean Pavilion at the shoreline with Pike Place Market.

Thirty years ago, the Hiawatha/Highway 55 re-route and a MnDOT light rail project made a big impact on Minneapolis residents. But the impact was not always positive. The construction project threatened Coldwater Spring, the 11,000-year-old spring that furnished water to Fort Snelling for a century and was the birthplace of Minnesota. Coldwater Spring is on federal land and is contiguous with Minnehaha Park. The Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota community and the Park and River Alliance went to court against MnDOT, the City of Minneapolis, and the Park Board to cease the destruction of Coldwater Spring. 

Today, Coldwater is still flowing thanks to hundreds of young protestors who were joined by Mendota Dakota descendants of the people who lived along the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers when Europeans arrived.

Advocate and water protector SuSu Jeffrey opposed the re-route project.
