Following 2019’s Inside, VC-118A returns to Delsin to present his fourth album, Spiritual Machines. It marks an exciting shift in focus for Samuel van Dijk as his flagship project nears a decade skirting the deeper ends of techno and electro.

Over the past two and half years, van Dijk forensically reviewed the key aspects of his production process as he dug down in search of the essence of the VC-118A sound. By creating his own complement of sample banks, software racks and devices, van Dijk was able to work with a hybridised analogue-digital system purely of his own making. Less in thrall to the strict rigours of techno and electro standards, Spiritual Machines’ 13 album tracks encompass more fluid shifts into abstract and downtempo, dub-inflected realms, without losing sight of the elements that have made VC-118A so compelling from the beginning.

Burnished machine soul, aqueous atmospherics and immaculate drum programming abound, but in the mellow, enveloping sound world of Spiritual Machines you can hear van Dijk guiding his music into a broader form that sounds at once more assured and more inspired.

Hendrik van Boetzelaer is my guest in Episode 27. The swiss based artist is also formerly known as Opuswerk. He is known for his passion for warm and forward thinking music for the body regardless of the genre. 

 His style is always forward thinking and finds adventurous ways of transporting the dancers beyond the boundaries of the club all the while challenging them. His musical consistency, brings him to play, in the best clubs and festivals from Concrete to Tresor or Mute, CTM Festival and Montreux Jazz or Paleo.

 In the first hour I recorded a mix for you with new material from the likes of VC-118A, Sterac, DJ Nobu, Dino Sabatini and more.

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Dataintrång found his way into Electro 2020 after hearing a live set by legendary producer Luke Eargoggle (@Dr-Lindh) at a local club. Shortly thereafter, he started producing and has released several tracks finding his sound more and more.

Multicast Dynamics returns with a sixth studio album but one that marks something of a new chapter. Ancient Circuits is a departure from previous works on Denovali and one that stands the project aside as a powerful electronic act that tells stories while also serving up heavy hitting soundscapes that are persuasive, unexpected and disturbing. 

By now, Multicast Dynamics is revered for absorbing and journeying albums that are as immersive as a film or evocative as an audio book. Since 2015, long players like Aquatic System, Outer Envelopes, Continental Ruins and Lost World have explored imagined civilisations and futuristic histories in infinite detail. 

Ancient Circuits is another album with a very real sense of space - it places you in the middle of a sparse yet richly detailed world, with sonic illusions and synthetic realisations from a post-human world. Listening to this album is like being lost deep in the fabric of space itself, where ancient cosmology and modern technology intersect. 

Each of the four 25-minute pieces are clearly demarcated yet sequential stories that introduce new characters and are drawn out of long and complex studio experiments. They are collages of sound that glimmer, disturb, shine, dive deep and explore new realms. Sonic gradients and electronic pulses add dynamics and drive as you zoom in to microscopic levels of detail and revel in the information and density you find when you get there. 

This album is about technology that is well advanced yet no longer in existence today. An interface that has been heavily decayed after surviving many waves of history and extreme conditions and shows the signs of heavy wear and tear. It could well be a type of interface located in a hidden room, surrounded by organic debris and material decay, but one still responsive enough through a series of toggles, switches and dials to manipulate a sensory world.

Ancient Circuits is ambient so arresting that it pulls you deep inside. It is suspensory, storytelling music that keeps you on edge. It is as emotionally stirring as it is mentally evocative. Once again, it's an album that finds Multicast Dynamics draw together visual art, sound design, cinematic ideas and conceptual thinking to come up with a work that is a multi-sensory exploration that puts you as the central character in an expressive musical world.

In celebration of 606 day (the 6th of June) I have put together a non-stop mix of songs that feature the Roland TR-606 drum machine. This mix is focused only on Electro.

The TR-606 & TB-303 launched together in 1981 as a matched pair to provide solo artists the chance to practice without other individuals, solely using the TR-606 and TB-303 as drums and bass lines to practice to, but the programming and artificial sounds made the boxes uncomfortable to use and they soon lost their luster. With a punching, mids-focused sound somewhere between the tone of the 909 and the 808, the 606 was a compact and visually-direct drum machine that had a much more discreet form factor than its siblings. The 606 has a tight punch rather than the boom of the 808, and the percussion has a distinctly metallic quality, even the snare. This gives the 606 a unified feeling that has captured the imaginations of artists for generations.

I had the idea to start an own podcast series for quite a while now but I was a bit afraid to be honest. I wanted to keep it in a radio show format, as this is the format I grew up with and this was how I’ve discovered music. Also I wanted to do something different as I have a pretty wide range in music which I like. I get influenced by so many things so I thought it might be interesting for you to take this platform as the concept for a podcast. I will dig deeper and deeper through my collection of records and present it to you each month. It doesn’t matter how new or old the music is, it’s just about creating a good vibe to listen to, to enter another dimension.

Moreover the idea is also to invite guests, in irregular intervals - people I respect for what they are doing music wise and for the culture.

Samuel van Dijk is a multi-faceted artist who never stops exploring intriguing contrasts. His music is about meaning as well as movement and it comes under a number of different aliases. Each one takes listeners through a world rich in detailed sound designs, and whether served up as a dynamic live show or tightly woven DJ set, it is best heard in dark and cosy environments. It is in these settings that listeners can get the more immersive possible experience and detach themselves from the noise of everyday life.

The Dutch-born, Finland-based artist has a fluid creative process that can take him anywhere but often ends up in one of three distinctive areas: Mohlao was van Dijk's first alias and is rooted in heavy bass and dub, driving by pulsing deep techno rhythms and ambient synths. This has been showcased across numerous short and long-form releases on labels like Silent Season and Hypnus Records.

VC-118A has honed in on a broken beat, bass-heavy style that comes laden with atmosphere and forward-thinking sound designs. That has been proven across numerous EPs on Tabernacle and Frustrated Funk, as well as four albums. The last two came on Delsin and 2021's Spiritual Machines was another sublime and coherent fusion of dub, ambient, downtempo, electro and experimental. Live shows are cinematic electro affairs, while DJ sets are fun and adventurous explorations of educated electronic sounds.

Multicast Dynamics is all about deep ambient and abstract downtempo sound worlds. It is a hypnotic soundtrack made from stripped back rhythms and escapist drones. There have been nine albums to date on labels like Astral Industries and Denovali, with 2021's Language of Colours the latest conceptual album detailed with organic ambient, paired back downtempo beats and lush soundscapes.

van Dijk further broadens his musical horizons through his monthly Chaindata radio show but also enjoys the fresh perspectives that come with collaborating. He has done so with Rasmus Hedlund as Dialog, where the pair explore the interplay between dub music, field recordings and analogue synths, dynamic frequencies and evocative sonic imagery. He has also worked with instrumentalist and composer Sid Hille on the two-part album Metamorphosis, which was infused with his soothing keys and haunting theremin. It is yet another example of van Dijk working with others in order to further himself, to learn more and to level up his sound. Whatever he does, van Dijk never fails to translate his freeform and exploratory approach to music into something with its own sense of beauty, narrative and magic.

Electronic music has been the soundtrack to my life.
80s Synthpop through to Chicago house, acid house, electro and techno in it's myriad forms.
No clippy-cloppy bobbins or business techno though.

Spent years being the obligatory 'Bedroom DJ' along with regular visits to the techno mecca 'The Orbit' and other nights, mainly Leeds based, such as 'Superconductor', 'Darkside' & 'Detatched', culminated with a DJ spot at Detatched in 2009 playing a mainly electro/italo-house set in the bar.
What followed then was a monthly resident spot playing techno when supporting artists in the main room or the chance to play electro, house and electro-pop in the bar at Detatched followed by Future-Past and the short-lived Secret Maze, supporting some of the cream of the techno scene including warm-up slots for Claude Young, James Ruskin, Marcel Fengler, Shed, Peter van Hoesen, Joey Beltram, Octave One, Truss/MPIA3, Detroit Techno Militia, Forward Strategy Group, 65d Mavericks, Subjected and Xhin amongst others. That was supplemented by appearing on the same bill as many other DJs and artists including Hardfloor, CJ Bolland, Woody McBride, Alan Oldham, Rolando, Derrick May, DJ Bone, Reeko, Exium, Sandwell District, Grovskopa, Ancient Methods, Inigo Kennedy, Bas Mooy, Damon Wild, Takaaki Itoh, Go Hiyama and Neil Landstrumm.

DVS NME is an Electro music producer/deejay and Post Punk enthusiast living in Colorado. He runs a weekly mix series called @DarkScienceElectro and is actively producing under the name @DVSNME
