I wanted something that started chaotic and then through the process of repeated "cleansings" ended up with something more "pure".

The equipment used was a Bora (a small six oscillator dronesynth made by a local company called Decadebridge), an OP-1 (just acting as a USB interface), and VCV Rack running on my Mac. In VCV Rack, the signal from the Bora was put through a filter and a delay, the cut off and delay times of which were modulated by a slow LFO. The final sound was put through Vahalla DSP's Übermod and Room plugins for a bit of stereo width and reverb, with some final EQ and compression in U-he Presswerk.

When recording I just left the LFO to affect the filter and delay, then on the Bora slowly removed the oscillator cross-modulations and then five of the six oscillators until only one was left.

"Morse the Raven Calls" is my 3rd exploration using Morse Code as a musical element - primarily rhythm. I wanted to paint a sonic picture of a raven's arrival – its flight, a dynamic dance of ups, downs, and curves as it maneuvers through a windstorm, with its piercing warning calls before disappearing into the distance.

I made the song using the unique Arabian Flute by Erik the Flutemaker. Crafted entirely from bamboo, its warm, resonant tones and two-octave range make it incredibly expressive. Tuned to itself rather than standard A440 - with a minor melodic scale, it's perfect for creating the kind of improvisational soundscapes in this song. This song was woven together from three tracks of the wood flute, brought to life with the help of Logic Pro and Valhalla DSP effects plugins.

Morse the Raven Calls

My composition "When the Sky Falls" swirls, meanders in an ambient soundscape inviting us on a journey through sound.  To create this song I played my Jerry Rockwell Electric Dulcimer (tuned CGC) for a constant, supportive atmospheric/airy backdrop and improvised on my Sausato High C Whistle providing a clear, bright sound weaving in and out of the rich backdrop adding depth and expression.  I experimented with a new chord progression C, Csus4, Dm, Dsus4, Am, F, F.  Both the dulcimer and whistle sounds were processed through LogicPro with Valhalla DSP that enhanced their natural sound qualities and created an immersive/ethereal sound.

When The Sky Falls

"Desert Echoes: Drifting Through Time" is an ambient soundscape - tranquil, atmospheric with echoes blending with a soothing melodic improvisation.  This long and slow moving song provides us with an opportunity to relax, reflect, and breathe.

I created this song as a study of the Mixolydian Mode.  It has an atmospheric drone with melodic improvising emphasizing the flatted 7th note resulting in the unique Mixolydian sound.  I made it with a MIDI keyboard, Logic Pro, and Valhalla DSP.

The soothing qualities of this song make it a good background to relax, focus and/or do creative work.

Desert Echoes: Drifting Through Time

"Sequoia's Journey" is an ambient piece - long and slow creating a mostly tranquil atmosphere for relaxation.  The soundscape has 3 distinct tracks that blend together all crafted by using LogicPro and enhanced with Valhalla DSP effects.

Track 1:  Ambient drone provided by a MIDI keyboard playing a 2 octave C chord.

Track 2:  An electric dulcimer plays a very slow looping chord progression of C, G, Am, and F setting a gentle foundation for the piece.

Track 3:  Wandering improvised melodies by electric dulcimer in mostly Mixolydian mode while exploring a few chord dials - adding a layer of spontaneity to the composition.
