Miyazaki modeled Nausicaä after the The Lady Who Loved Insects (虫めづる姫君 , Mushi-mezuru Himegimi), a twelfth-century Japanese tale of one who defies social convention and breaches the decorum expected of a Heian court lady. At a time when most girls would have shaved their eyebrows and stained their teeth black, this was most unusual.

Uno choc che solo nella seduta di giovedì aveva portato le quattro maggiori istituzioni a stelle e strisce – JpMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup e Wells Fargo – a bruciare 52,4 miliardi di dollari di valorizzazione.

Gli ultimi giorni

Silicon Valley Bank è stata chiusa. E così ha conquistato sempre più spazio nel settore.

Svb, la corsa ai depositi

La sua storia è precipitata mecoledì sera, quando Svb ha annunciato una perdita da 1,8 miliardi di dollari a seguito della vendita di un portafoglio titoli da 21 miliardi, che aveva scaricato per far cassa a seguito di un crollo repentino dei depositi dei clienti. Un evento che ha portato alla necessità di un immediato collocamento di azioni sul mercato, per puntellare il capitale. Pare, riporta il Wsj, che abbia anche provato a trovare un Cavaliere bianco pronto a intervenire, senza fortuna. La pressione è salita ulteriormente quando Peter Thiel e altri Venture capital di alto profilo hanno suggerito alle compagnie nel loro portafoglio di ritirare i soldi dalla banca.

Un consiglio che ha alimentato i dubbi degli analisti sulla possibilità che gli istituti debbano realizzare perdite importanti con la dismissione obbligata del loro portafoglio di bond, messo sotto pressione dalla risalita dei tassi che (lavorando in senso opposto al valore dei titoli) li deprezza dal punto di vista del capitale.

Il fuggi fuggi dei depositi ha pesato come un macigno in Borsa, dove l’azione di Svb ha messo insieme un -80% dalla notizia della perdita sui titoli a venerdì mattina. E così, per evitare guai peggiori, si è arrivati all’intervento delle autorità: è stata creata una nuova entità, la Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara, nella quale sono stati trasferiti tutti i fondi. I depositanti fino a 250mila dollari potranno accedere ai loro fondi da lunedì – hanno garantito le autorità, e anche il Tesoro di Janet Yellen ha detto di seguire da vicino la vicenda – mentre per gli altri sarà abilitata una linea d’emergenza specifica.

I dubbi sul futuro della Silicon Valley

La Silicon Valley è entrata in una stagione di tagli e grande ripensamento degli investimenti, che erano cresciuti a dismisura anche sotto la spinta della digitalizzazione forzata della pandemia. Un trend che si è pesantemente invertito nei mesi più recenti e che, complice il rialzo dei tassi, ha portato a un generale ridimensionamento delle ambizioni industriali e delle aspettative borsistiche del comparto tech.

Il caso Silvergate

La vicenda di Svb si è per altro sommata con timing esplosivo a quella vicenda di Silvergate, la banca californiana dedicata al mondo cripto che ha chiuso i battenti. A pesare sono state, in questo caso, l’ondata di ribassi sulle cripto e anche il fallimento di Ftx, l’exchange finito gambe all’aria con cui Silvergate intrecciava rapporti. Una fine, quella di Silvergate, che a sua volta sta gettando ombre nel comparto cripto, come dimostra il -6% di ieri di Coinbase che pure si è affrettata a rimarcare di avere una esposizione minima sulla banca che ha chiuso.

Gli effetti sul sistema

Come sottolinea la Bloomberg, alla base della crisi c’è una questione che rischia di diventare strutturale: l’aumento dei tassi di interesse ha lasciato le banche cariche di obbligazioni a basso interesse che non possono essere vendute in fretta senza perdite. Quindi, se troppi clienti prelevano i loro depositi contemporaneamente, si rischia un boomerang. Il problema è che, nel momento in cui una banca subisce un ritiro massiccio di depositi, non trova nei bond in pancia un cuscinetto sufficiente di liquidità immediatamente realizzabile se non a caro prezzo.

Svb, ad esempio, aveva praticamente raddoppiato asset e depositi nel 2021: flussi in ingresso che aveva parcheggiato in Treasury e altre obbligazioni governative, che con il rialzo dei tassi si sono svalutate. Il calcolo che ricorda il Financial Times, citando i dati della Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, è che le banche Usa siano seddute su 620 miliardi di perdite non realizzati sul loro portafoglio di titoli.

Gli investitori

Tra gli investitori, “la gente si chiede chi sarà il prossimo”, ha detto a Bloomberg Jens Nordvig, fondatore della compagnia di intelligence finanziaria Exante Data e Market Reader. “Sto ricevendo un sacco di domande di questo tipo da parte dei clienti”. Non a caso, molte azioni di banche regionali Usa sono andate in grande stress in queste ore. Secondo gli analisti, non è a rischio la sopravvivenza del sistema. Per Guy de Blonay, Investment Manager, Financial Equities di Jupiter Asset Management “la Silicon Valley Bank ha una struttura di bilancio meno diversificata rispetto a molte grandi banche globali ed è più esposta ai deflussi di depositi a causa di un tipo di cliente molto specifico: gli imprenditori tecnologici”. Senz’altro si pone un problema per gli istituti: per convincere i depositanti a non cambiare casacca, dovranno offrire loro incentivi a restare. Ovvero, remunerazioni che metteranno a repentaglio i loro margini.
