Talking Guitars: Nuno Bettencourt’s New Guitar Brand, Andy Summers Vlog & More! 9/30/25

🔥🎸 “Frankenstein, my wife, and we’re good.” Wolfgang Van Halen revealed that during the devastating LA wildfires, he kept his father Eddie Van Halen’s most legendary guitar — the iconic Frankenstein — in the backseat of his car for three weeks, ready to roll if evacuation orders came down.

The Mammoth WVH frontman told Premier Guitar that protecting the priceless piece of rock history became his top priority while chaos unfolded around Los Angeles. Entire neighborhoods were threatened, musicians scrambled to save gear, and for Wolfgang, the stakes couldn’t have been higher — 5150 Studios and his dad’s irreplaceable legacy were in the fire’s path.

⚡ “I thought, I’ll have Frankenstein and my wife, and we’re good,” Wolfgang shared. “We had a U-Haul packed with everything else we felt was worth saving. Luckily, it didn’t come to that — but it was a traumatizing time we’re still working through.”

That experience directly fueled the anxious, apocalyptic energy behind Mammoth WVH’s new album The End, dropping October 24. Wolf says this record finds him stepping out with a rawer, unfiltered guitar vibe:
👉 “On the first album I was really reserved. Now, I’m worrying less about what people think. The rough edges are there, and that’s how I wanted it — like you’re in the studio with me.”

Exclusively Van Halen: Remembering Eddie Van Halen – 5 Years Later. A Tribute. 🎸⚡ 10/6/25

I 1981 skyllede bølgen videre fra den engelske New Wave of British Heavy Metal, og bands som Iron Maiden, Samson, Saxon, Def Leppard og Tygers of Pan Tang.  Der var også fuld gang i de britiske frontløbere Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne og Motörhead. Jens ‘Jam’ Rasmussen og hans gæster, anmelder og forfatter Steffen Jungersen og Michael Stützer Hansen, bl.a. radiovært og guitarist i metalbandet Artillery, og musiker med meget mere, Michael Denner, fortæller.

Motörhead havde endda besøg af danske Lars Ulrich i deres øvelokale. Et par måneder senere havde Ulrich selv sin første Metallica-øver med James Hetfield ovre i LA.  I Danmark stillede Brats knivskarpt på metallen og blev til Mercyful Fate.

Der var megen anden hård rock i 1981, så tag med os tilbage til dette mægtige metal-år sammen med vores faste, tunge hold: Jens "Jam" Rasmussen, studievært, og de tre kompetente studiegæster, journalist Steffen Jungersen og d’herrer guitarister Michael Stützer Hansen og Michael Denner.

- Danske Lars Ulrich er flyttet til Californien for at forfølge sin tenniskarriere, men tager lige på en metallisk dannelsesrejse til England i sommeren 1981, hvor han blandt andet er til festival med Ozzy Osbourne og Motörhead, som han også besøger i deres øvelokale.

- Opildnet af dannelsesrejsen, beslutter Lars Ulrich sig for selv at danne et band. I oktober 1981 har han sin første Metallica-øvesession med guitaristen James Alan Hetfield i Los Angeles, Californien.

- Jungersen og Stützer jubler over Ozzys andet soloalbum Diary of a Madman og Motörheads vaskeægte livealbum No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith.

- Venom debuterer med rå garage metal, diabolsk image og eksplicit Satan-retorik.

- Danske Brats skruer bissen på, laver fede heavy metal demoer, får Michael Denner tilbage i lineuppet, og bliver til… Mercyful Fate. 

- Denner og Stützer fortæller om Mercyful Fates koncertpremiere på Selsmoseskolen i Tåstrup, og lidt om anden dansk hård rock anno ‘81: Devil’s Symphony, The Studs, Pretty Maids og Pulze.

- Los Angeles 1981 er andet end stedet for den første Metallica-øver: Joan Jett grovhitter med I Love Rock’n’Roll og Motley Crüe albumdebuterer med hedonistisk hard rock på  Too Fast For Love. I Helsinki albumdebuterer Motley Crües åndsbrødre i Hanoi Rocks.

- Tilbage i LA, aflirer Y&T en stor smule AC/DC og tænder en tidlig glød i Lars Ulrich, mens Van Halen fortsætter rockfesten på deres fjerde album.

- Ritchie Blackmore og Rainbow indspiller nyt album i Sweet Silence med Flemming Rasmussen, hvilket ikke mindst noteres af ovennævnte Ulrich.

- De tidligere Deep Purple-sangere, David Coverdale (i Whitesnake) og Ian Gillan (i eget band) er fortsat produktive. Sidstnævnte udgiver endda hele to album i 1981. 

- Jungersen gen-introduceres i studiet til tonerne af Accepts Son of A Bitch, men lever fint med det.

- Vi afrunder med årets album fra Black Sabbath, Judas Priest og AC/DC, som alle tre havde noget at leve op til fra året før.
