Travelin' Girl (unreleased; unmastered)

The Journey From Grape To Raisin is Long Ryders’ cofounder Sid Griffin’s first solo album in a decade. 

It was recorded in Nashville with his trusted producer Thomm Jutz (Nanci Griffith, Otis Gibbs, Steve Young) and dear friends such as legendary bassist Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs, Chris Hillman) and session whiz Tammy Rogers (Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood). 

Its eleven songs include ten Griffin originals and one campfire cover of, get ready, the Velvet Underground’s Femme Fatale. 

When asked about the sessions and the album as a whole Griffin smiles and calls The Journey From Grape To Raisin “my career highlight, the best work I am ever likely to do. Heaven forbid I should go but if I did I’d die happy.”

"Femme Fatale" by The Velvet Underground performed by Roots Asylum

"Femme Fatale" was written by Lou Reed for The Velvet Underground's debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1966).

The song was inspired by Edie Sedgwick, one of Andy Warhol’s muses, who was known for her glamorous yet tumultuous lifestyle. Warhol himself suggested that Reed write the song about Sedgwick, capturing her complex persona as a seductive yet dangerous figure. The track became part of Warhol's broader influence on the album, where he served as the producer and visual director​

Sedgwick's connection to Warhol and her role in the social scene of the 1960s added depth to the song's narrative, making it a cornerstone of the band's early work and an emblem of the Warhol Factory’s artistic output during that era​

Themes: The song explores the classic "femme fatale" archetype—a woman who is captivating, mysterious, and manipulative. It is a warning wrapped in allure, portraying the consequences of falling under the spell of such a character. The lyrics convey both admiration and caution, creating a dual sense of attraction and danger.

Musical Style: Musically, "Femme Fatale" has a dreamy, melancholic tone, contrasting with the darker, more abrasive sound of other tracks on the album. Nico's haunting vocals enhance the sense of detachment and mystery, while the simple, melodic structure gives it a pop sensibility layered with the band’s signature avant-garde style​

Recorded in April and forgotten until now, my interpretation of "The Hunters", a parody of "All Tomorrow's Parties" as performed by satirical art rock group analogous to the Velvet Underground "Sunday Around Noonish", fronted by "Freeko" (i.e. Nico) and later by Scoobert-Doo. As originally seen in Season 2 of Scooby Doo! Mystery Inc., Episode 6, "The Art of Darkness".

Since spring 2023 I have been writing and recording mainly as a "one man band", using acoustic & electric guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, an old piano, conga, etc. and a voice.
Former member of German bands: In Rags (with Sami Yli-Sirniö and Roman Keymer), Sharkpool and Dutch bands Garbitsjkeng, The Wit, Trio van Putten and and a few others. I baptized my Alter Ego and named him "Pot Barley".

I'm the guy from the Long Ryders in 1980s L.A. & the guy in the Coal Porters in London now. Yes, I also make solo albums and do some singer-songwriter gigs. Million Dollar Bash is my book on The Basement Tapes and I've never met Dylan.

Sid Griffin displays many chapeaux in his career as a multi-faceted musician, proud author, knowledgeable broadcaster and professional golfer. Or is that professional go-fer? Okay, only the first three hats get anywhere near his noggin, but they all fit snugly. He is also a proud parent and part time journalist as well as a man who makes excellent cheese mushroom omelettes.

An eighth-generation native Kentuckian who currently resides in England, Sid has popped up in literary circles due to the success of his Million Dollar Bash book on Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes as well as the follow up Shelter From The Storm. He has also appeared in music circles due to his bluegrass band the Coal Porters enjoying success after success with their new CD, No. 6. and to his many media appearances, be they via print media or the airwaves. In 2006 ABC’s The Jimmy Kimmel Show had their house band play Sid’s song Jimmy Reed as they went to commercial…our hero was watching that eve and fell off the sofa when he heard the familiar melody struck up. In addition to falling off furniture Griffin has already won a Lifetime Achievement Award in Italy in 2003 (Piero Ciampi Award), and Sid’s old band the Long Ryders, the legendary founders of alt-country, are occasionally found touring.

Sid appears as Resident Musicologist on BBC Radio 6 Music DJs Stuart Maconie and Mark Radcliffe’s excellent afternoon show and this brought Sid to an entirely new demographic. Frequently heard on late night BBC Radio, Griffin’s silver-toned vocal chords were heard extensively when the BBC broadcast Mark Lamarr’s four-part series Redneck Music in early 2008. (Griffin was not the redneck in question.)

As a musician, Griffin continues to perform on bluegrass mandolin with his acoustic Coal Porters ensemble. The Coal Porters have played festivals in many places around the world including Glastonbury in the UK, Kilkenny Festival in Ireland and the World Of Bluegrass festival in Kentucky USA. He looks forward the future as his old rock band The Long Ryders sometimes perform again. The Long Ryders box set Final Wild Songs was released in January 2016 to universal acclaim, creating a new demand for live concerts by the band.

And yes, in between all of this activity Sid Griffin still performs the occasional, and very special, solo troubadour show. Lately his solo appearances are in support of his 2015 solo album The Trick Is To Breathe, which earned Griffin four and five star reviews globally. In 2018 Sid is performing solo in Spain, Italy, the UK, Scandinavia and his native United States.

Prima Records has compiled, archived and reissued seven albums of Sid’s 1980's band, The Long Ryders. The fifth of these reissues was the first “new” Long Ryders material in sixteen years with the well-received album, Three Minute Warnings: Live In New York City.

A sixth CD was released in October 2007, Live 2004: State Of Our Reunion and a seventh, an expanded Native Sons with extra tracks, appeared to loud huzzahs in January 2011. At present there are no further Long Ryder reissues planned.

The Long Ryders reformed for live concerts in 2004, 2009, 2014 and twice in 2016 and the band hope to record some new songs for a new album! So watch this space for a major announcement as regards new Long Ryders studio tracks.

The Coal Porters, Sid’s new band, continue to perform live and release albums via Prima Records with their latest being 2016’s No. 6, their well-received sixth studio album.

Mark Kowarsch, gebürtig aus Detmold, spielte in den ostwestfälischen Bands Speed Niggs, Sharon Stoned, Tagesschau, Kommando Schwarzer Freitag und Elektrosushi - seit 2009 veröffentlicht er unter dem Namen Tortuga Bar.
Auch in seiner Köln-Phase (2000-2008) war er aktiv, arbeitete als Journalist für die Visions, Intro und diverse Fanzines und gründete mit Klaus Cornfield (Katze, Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan) und Rocco Clein (Viva) das "Likely to be dropped DJ Team". Mark war Resident DJ im Gebäude 9 und Stereo Wonderland und spielte Schlagzeug in der Riot Grrrl Band "Klitpop".
Aktuell moderiert Mark seine eigene Radiosendung "Antikörper" bei ByteFM und den RIOT RADIO Podcast. Er legt immer noch unregelmäßig mit seinem "Likely to be Dropped DJ Team" auf und veranstaltet und organisiert das "Kings of Lo-Fi Festival". Mark hatte eine monatliche Kolumne "Der Indie-Stammtisch" bei Tonspion und die YouTube-Stream Tipps-Kolumne ''TV Party Tonight'' bei prettyinnoise.de, für die ihm aber gerade die Zeit fehlen.
2009 veröffentlichte das Dortmunder "VierSieben Records" Label das erste Album von TORTUGA BAR "Narcotic Junkfood Revolution" (47 RECORDS/AL!VE/FINETUNES) mit vielen prominenten Gästen wie Evan Dando (The Lemonheads), Phillip Boa, Nagel, David Cunningham, Bernadette La Hengst, Sportfreunde Stiller, Virginia Jetzt!, Klaus Cornfield, Gitbox!, Navel, Gisbert zu Knyphausen, uvm, sowie die "Storm EP" (47 RECORDS/FINETUNES).
2015 wurde "74 on 47", ein 4 Records non-profit Free Download Project von TORTUGA BAR & SHARON STONED online auf der Homepage von "VierSieben Records" veröffentlicht. Am 14. April 2024 veröffentlchte ''Unter Schafen Records'' das auf 500 Stück limitierte Doppel-Vinyl-Album ''Retrospective'' von SHARON STONED, eine Best-Of-Collection, die schon im Pre-order ausverkauft war.
Mark Kowarsch hat u.a. auf der "12" von The Notwist, auf "Royal Flush" von Locust Fudge, "Out Of Tune" von Shell und zusammen mit Nikki Sudden auf der EP von Fuse-Empire mitgewirkt. Auf der 2011 veröffentlichten Ostwestfalen Compilation "Wir kommen hier wech" findet man eins der ersten Projekte von Mark Kowarsch - in dem Projekt "Tagesschau" spielte Mark 1982 mit Frank Behnke und Florian Körner von der Band Mutter.
Mark Kowarsch komponiert auch Filmmusik und arbeitet regelmäßig mit diversen Regisseuren zusammen. Er hat Musik für die Filme "Avantgarde", "Bloody Monster", "Terror Island Overkill" und "Sex, Dogz & Rock'n'Roll" komponiert, sowie für das Hörspiel "Feeder - Schrei der Angst".

The Sunset Strip emerged out of the vibrant 80s Australian indie music scene with very different slant to the Detroit sound that was predominant. Mining a seam of guitar-heavy music that stretched from The Byrds to Crazy Horse to Krautrock to Eno-ambience and beyond, the band was critically but never commercially successful and fell apart in 1995 with one album unreleased. That album, Stone Lazy, came out in 2015. It saw The Strip at the height of its creative powers and fulfills every bit of the band's early promise. The Strip has was been reborn in 2017 with Warwick and Andy recording and releasing a new album in 2017 called 'The Endless Sea'. This is an album that builds on the psych instrumentals that dotted all their original releases. After the success of this release the band expanded the new approach even further, folding elements of Lemmy-era Hawkwind psychedelic-grunge and musique concrete to create the 2019 album Crystal Ships Infinite Arrivals. Again the the experime tsl approach was expanded into the epic double album Open City that has just been released as of April 2023. This is guitar music at its broadest - from maelstrom to melody to ambient pulse. Prepare to be swept away.
