Ambient Techno Live Jam

Live from our Yalda night event ‪@nasha_helsinki‬ studio where I played this special warm-up set. 

Samples include the Persian legend Hayedeh (from Tire Mojgan, Nemidanam, Nemikheham Bedanam) and some Indian raga clips.

I'm deepening my explorations in the soundscapes of MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) while fitting them to my own organic & hypnotic techno sound.

Sailing somewhere between dubby grooves, rolling polymeters and hypnotic rhythms topped off with some analog bass goodness 🎛️

Today, I'm here
to show you a trick
to make the Volca Keys drone,
like a Throbbing Gristle 
or a Sun-O 

A drone in music refers
to a  sustained or continuous sound,  
typically a single note or chord, 
that serves  as a harmonic
or textural foundation in a  
musical composition. 
It often provides a  sense of stability.

Volca Keys is a fantastic little box.  
Perfect for leads, pads, or plucks.  
but a machine built for dancy beats, 
doesn't lean well into moaning or droning. 
It seems like there would be a note hold, 
but we're stepping on new ground, 
so no. 

I begin by lowering the octave knob,
casting a dark, menacing tone.  
I filter out the higher frequencies,
snuffing out the light. 
The descent begins. Record the note,
letting it linger through the loop.  
Precision is irrelevant;
just be carefull with the sequencer unleashed.
I connect a cable to the sync input,
its other end dangling like a severed limb. 

The note persists,
an eternal echo trapped by the frozen sequencer.
A haunting drone takes form. 
Now, I'll  delve into oscillator waveforms,
filters, and effects, shaping the creation.
The sequencer never steps
the sounds the chord continues.
This is a song where the Beats Per Minute, 
is zero, time is effectively stopped. 
It's a mating call from this little box
out into the void. 
waiting for a signal, 
not a waveform or a chord, 
but a single click. 
Like a call one might wait for, 
that never comes. 

As the drone continues without a signal,
I find solace in its unwavering hum—
a gentle reminder that even in stillness,
there’s beauty in the wait,
and in every unreturned call.
