"The Oregon Trail" - Winter Winds Show

Composer and arranger for the marching arts.  

Nick Riley (b. 1989) has been involved in the marching arts as a performer, educator, composer/arranger, ensemble administrator, and adjudicator since 2003.  

As founder of NPR Marching Concepts, Nick has composed/arranged over 600 works for marching band, indoor drumline, winter winds, and drum corps.  A sought-after and versatile composer, Nick is known for creating entertaining, accessible music that performers, audiences, and judges all enjoy.

Currently, Nick is pursuing a PhD in Music Education at The Ohio State University where he is a fully-funded Graduate Teaching Associate for the School of Music, instructing classes in instrumental pedagogy and music education as well as supervising student teachers in the field.  Nick earned his Master of Arts in Music Education from The Ohio State University in 2023 and his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Capital University in 2011.

Prior to pursuing his graduate studies full time, Nick was the Director of Bands at Liberty Center Local Schools in northwest Ohio from 2012 to 2021 where he instructed all bands grades 5 through 12 and also taught courses in music appreciation and elementary and middle school general music.  The band program doubled in size and boasted highly successful concert band, marching band, and chamber ensembles.

Nick is the co-founder of ConneXus, a PIW indoor drumline based out of central Ohio where he also serves as Ensemble Director, Program Coordinator, Ensemble Specialist, Front Ensemble Instructor, and President of the CPAA, Inc. Board of Directors.  Since co-founding ConneXus in the summer of 2012, Nick has played an integral role in ConneXus' growth, helping to grow the group from PIA to PIW in just seven seasons.  ConneXus is a 4-time WGI Regional Champion and a 5-time WGI World Championships Finalist.  

Nick's previous staff appointments reflect a diverse background in the pageantry arts.  Nick served as the Assistant Visual Caption Head for Legends Drum and Bugle Corps (2011-13), Percussion Consultant for The Ohio State University Marching Band (2011-14), Front Ensemble Instructor for Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps (2014), and Visual Instructor for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps (2016).  Nick has been on staff with the Gran Banda Drum and Bugle Corps from Medellin, Colombia, South America since 2014, serving on both the percussion and visual staffs.  Nick is currently the Percussion Composer/Arranger (2019-present) for the ensemble.  The "GB" is the first drum corps from South America to participate in DCI and is the 2014 DCI SoundSport Champion and 2017 runner-up.

As an adjudicator, Nick has been judging for the Ohio Music Education Association since 2012 and the Central States Judges Association since 2013.  Specializing in percussion and music general effect, Nick has judged in seven states and has been a Mid-States Band Association Championships judge annually since 2017.

Nick is proud to endorse Vic Firth, Sabian, Evans/D'Addario, and Black Swamp Percussion.  He is a member of OMEA, NAfME, PAS, CSJA, and PFCJ.  He resides in Columbus, Ohio.
