The March 13, 1938 international broadcast had two direct ties to the Pacific Northwest: CBS' Edward R. Murrow, who helped organize it and who reported from Vienna; and U.S. Senator Lewis B. Schwellenbach of the Evergreen State, who appeared as a guest.

My mother was born during World War II in England. This song recounts only a small fraction of her story.

She was born into a world lit by fire and shaken by bombs, where sirens screamed in the night and survival meant running to the shelters. She was carried in a wicker basket, ready to be rushed to safety at a moment’s notice.

She grew up in the aftermath—walking past bombed-out homes, sifting through rubble, learning to live with ration books and the echoes of war that never fully faded. She learned to recognize the wounds war left behind—not just in broken buildings and missing limbs, but in the haunted eyes of those who had seen too much.

She told me about the prejudice, the scars, the lessons history tried to teach but too many refused to learn. About how hatred is planted young, how people carry the past in their hearts, how some wounds take decades to heal—and how some never do.

She told me that history repeats when people choose to forget. That silence is dangerous, that the worst horrors start with people looking away.

And now, I see what she warned me about. I hear the same rhetoric, the same propaganda, the same hatred rising again.

She told me to pay attention.

So I am.

And I refuse to let her words be ignored.
