I wrote a bunch of rhymes based on the history of the Philly Mob, and immediately wanted to set them into a pre-existing Wall-of-Sound instrumental. I quickly decided I couldn't pull it off unless I adopted a Spoken-Word style, similar to the early Last Poets. By trial and error, I discovered there was a way to deliver the text according to the intrinsic rhythmic structure of the instrumental.. I knew I was onto something when the instrumental at times matched the intended dramatic effect by an unconscious synchronicity.
