Thou Orb Aloft Full - Dazzling (demo)

	Of Equality was commissioned by the Connecticut Children’s Choir of The Hartt School Community Division (Noah Glynn, Director).  I originally came across the main text for the work—a brief fragment by Walt Whitman—in the summer of 2015 when I was looking for poetry to set in a different composition.  I originally thought I might include that short poem in a set of songs about social issues, but Whitman’s words captivated me so much that I ended up using only that one, short text for the entire piece, which is about thirteen minutes long.  That wasn’t enough, though!  I kept hearing the text sung by a choir in my head, so I approached the administration of the Community Division about a possible collaboration with the Connecticut Children’s Choir.  
	I wanted to go beyond just setting the words to music and really engage with the students about the issue of equality.  The composition thus includes not only Whitman’s poem but also additional text inspired by discussions with members of the Prelude, Canticum, and Concert Choirs.  Their words and ideas shaped the piece, and I am so thankful I was given the opportunity to work with these bright, talented young singers!
        Though the piece originated as a work for children's choir, it has been arranged for mixed choir (SATB) and treble choir (SSA). This recording is the version for SATB with organ accompaniment.

Jessica Rudman’s music inspires empathy for social issues through stories of myth, magic, and the modern world. Described as a “new music ninja” by the Hartford Advocate, she blends lyrical melodies and dramatic narrative structures with sensual harmony and vibrant color to draw the audience into the world she has created. Her works for the concert hall, dance, and opera often differ in musical language and approach, with the common thread always being expressivity. She believes that the ability to reach one’s audience is of extreme importance in our current social, economic, and political environment. 

Jessica’s works have been performed by groups such as the International Contemporary Ensemble, the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, The Omaha Symphony’s Chamber Orchestra, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, and the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra.  She has received awards from SCI/ASCAP, Boston Metro Opera, the College Music Society, the International Alliance for Women in Music, and others. Jessica is a 2019 Connecticut Artist Fellow, with support from the Connecticut Office of the Arts. 

Jessica is an Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of Utah.

Vincent Russo has been composing music since 1988. He is a self taught musician on both guitar and keyboards. While growing up on Long Island, Vincent explored rock, blues, jazz and western classical music. Over the years Vincent has produced a wide range of works from chamber, symphonic, choral as well as more pop oriented and electronic styles of music.

Jo-Michael Scheibe was the Chair of the Thornton School of Music at USC. He conducted the USC Chamber Singers and taught choral conducting and choral methods.  Scheibe supervised the graduate and undergrad choral programs. He was named a USC and University of Miami Professor Emeritus of Music He was also names a 2023-2024 US Fulbright Scholar to Ireland.
