WATER

Boytakhal - A short story by Nadī: 

“Nana (grandpa), can you tell me a bit about your fishing village?”
My affinity with rivers started when I was a young woman. Born seven feet above sea level. Sat atop the boat with my Nana, headed to Boytakhal. Enthralled by Bengal’s beauty. Within the confines of these tectonics, I am equally fascinated by the destructive splendour of the river’s rage.

We’re at the Bangla cash and carry in a neighbourhood east of Sundown. Distant sounds resound the unconventional E-ktara melodies of a neo-Baulriddim. The white man fishmonger is fiddling with the settings on the machine printing the Rui for Nanu’s macher bhorta tonight. There are also separate machines printing Hilsa, Koi and many other fish that did not migrate in time or survive the Warming.
I put on the headset and log onto the controls for the remote submarine drone. It is here you can watch what would have been our parent’s shattered futures before your eyes. Fact, 75% of this land is under water. Stories from relatives that warned of Kutubdia’s disappearing shorelines had reached mythic proportions amongst migrants to the New Tropics. At low tide, they can almost make out where their house used to sit. These days, those that could afford it would hire drones decked out for excavating the sunken villages to retrieve lost family heirlooms. I must visit the Old Tropics before it’s sealed off. But at what cost?

Today in Sundown my avocado is not ripe enough for my lunch. Back home, the cyclone continues the tainting of our waters. The salt that it brings had flooded the former paddy fields. Tomorrow our future ancestors cease to exist. No footprints: before they even had a chance to float.

The printing of the Rui is complete. It’s funny that the fishes are printed whole, nonetheless, lifeless. We’ll make a stock with the bones later. Nana unconsciously touched the printer and the fishmonger snapped, ‘don’t touch anything in my tropics, you can do that in your own one’. Nana obviously knew from the belittling tone that he was prejudiced. I didn’t have to translate. 

You can hear the continuous sound of water moving around you in Boytakhal. Soft alluvial soil allows the rivers to flow through Bengal at ease, changing their course often. Swelling unimaginably in the diminishing monsoon seasons. Submerging the last of a great many towns and villages in the neighbourhood. The ambivalent nature of a river is a captivating analogy for the struggle for our peoples’ secure role in society. A society that can both help and decimate the souls relying on it. 

Nana still can’t be bothered to learn the local tongue in Sundown. Perhaps he has a belief system that renders him incapable of learning, that it’s too late for him now. Maybe he thinks he will lose all culture and in turn his own lexicon. I for one have almost forgotten my own mother tongue. When you get older the desire to assimilate fades, you realise difference is the only thing you ever had.

Me: I am scared that I am forgetting how to speak in Bengali. Would you like to talk about that day you took us to Boytakhal?

Nana: I do but my body has fallen, I can’t anymore. That land was taken over. I lost it in a battle that could not be won.
