"Fugitive Traces" (Punctum Books) is a CD album and accompanying PDF booklet that collages the director’s commentary from over a dozen Werner Herzog films with electronic, chamber, and rock music to both pay homage to one of the world’s most visionary filmmakers and critique an artistic practice rooted in contradiction and frequent disaster.

You know the stories. Werner Herzog exploited native workers to clear a swath of rainforest and pull a steamship up a mountain in Peru. Werner Herzog climbed an active volcano on an evacuated island, and then claimed embarrassment that the volcano had not erupted. Werner Herzog brought about the deaths of 10,000 tame rats he’d smuggled into the Netherlands for the filming of "Nosferatu."

The album’s accompanying “lyrics” comprise an essay that explores the consequences of being seduced by Herzog’s unique brand of recklessness, documenting a disaster on the set of young filmmaker Joe Sacksteder’s "Silo."

Tracks from "Fugitive Traces" previously appeared on Sleepingfish, The Collagist, Textsound, Quarterly West, and Queen Vic Knives. The Young Vish is joined on this album by Chris Westhoff (guitar), Mark Dickson / Nests (guitar, mandolin), Hannah Robbins (cello), and Brian DiBlassio (piano).

A Sense of Irony

Producida sin comprar derechos a los herederos de Bram Stoker, Nosferatu comenzó su recorrido como una versión pirata de Dracula, de la que los tribunales ordenaron la (infructuosa) destrucción de todas y cada una de sus copias, pero al poco andar se convirtió en algo más: un punto de referencia esencial tanto del cine de terror y el cine alemán como de la pulsión romántica que encadena al séptimo arte con el Siglo XIX. Si la novela ya daba testimonio de la brillante intuición de Stoker para tomar viejos relatos folklóricos y construir a partir de estos una historia de pasión irreprimible, la película opera simplemente en niveles de genialidad, que aúnan las perspectivas de los diferentes autores de la cinta: el productor Albin Grau, el guionista Henrik Galeen, el actor Max Shreck, el director de foto Fritz Arno Wagner y el cineasta Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Para estos efectos, Nosferatu no es un mero clásico del cine mudo o el filme que consagró la poética del expresionismo alemán; se trata también de una obra que dialoga con el arte germánico del pasado, del presente y del futuro. La entrada hacia un intemporal mundo de tiniebla y criaturas tenebrosas. La confirmación de que imagen fílmica puede ser el registro de algo real, pero también un espejismo, un misterio. Episode 232 - Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979)

Based on Werner Herzog's journey from Munich to Paris on foot in hopes to save his dear friend Lotte Eisner's life documented in his book "On Walking In Ice", Rihards Kolmanis illustrates in his own abstract way scenes from the journey.

This is a live album, recorded in New England Conservatory's Brown Hall in March.

The Young Vish is Joe Sacksteder is a Midwesterner, originally. So he was totally unprepared for the earthquake that struck the Osa Peninsula as he sat outside a hostel reading Werner Herzog’s "Conquest of the Useless." Even less prepared to turn back to his reading and encounter the sentence that had been interrupted: “Lord Almighty, send us an earthquake.”

He's the author of the story collection "Make/Shift" (Sarabande Books) and the novel "Driftless Quintet" (Schaffner Press). His album of audio collages, "Fugitive Traces," is available from Punctum Books. Recent publications include Michigan Quarterly Review, The Offing, DIAGRAM, and West Branch. He has his PhD from the University of Utah and teaches at Sweet Briar College in Virginia.
