What does it mean to be called an “upstart crow”? In 1592, a pamphlet titled Greene’s groats-worth of witte described William Shakespeare, in the first allusion to him as a playwright, with this phrase, calling him “an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers.” This phrase sparked centuries of speculation. As Darren Freebury-Jones explores in his book, Shakespeare’s borrowed feathers: How early modern playwrights shaped the world’s greatest writer, Shakespeare’s so-called borrowing was neither unusual for the time nor a weakness—it was ultimately a testament to his genius.

Exploring how Shakespeare navigated a competitive theatrical scene in early modern England, Freebury-Jones reveals the ways in which Shakespeare reshaped the works of contemporaries like John Lyly, Thomas Kyd, and Christopher Marlowe into something distinctly his own. By combining traditional literary analysis with cutting-edge digital tools, he uncovers echoes of Lyly’s witty comedies and gender-bending heroines, Kyd’s tragic revenge dramas, and Marlowe’s powerful verse in Shakespeare’s early plays.

Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is author of the monographs: Reading Robert Greene: Recovering Shakespeare’s Rival (Routledge), Shakespeare’s Tutor: The Influence of Thomas Kyd (Manchester University Press), and Shakespeare’s Borrowed Feathers (Manchester University Press). He is Associate Editor for the first critical edition of The Collected Works of Thomas Kyd since 1901 (Boydell and Brewer). He has also investigated the boundaries of John Marston’s dramatic corpus as part of the Oxford Marston project and is General Editor for The Collected Plays of Robert Greene (Edinburgh University Press). His findings on the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries have been discussed in national newspapers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Observer, and The Independent as well as BBC Radio. His debut poetry collection, Rambling (Broken Sleep Books), was published in 2024. In 2023 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship.

Nisha Sharma on Adapting Shakespeare for Modern Romances

What if Gertrude had more power than we thought? What if Ophelia’s fate wasn’t sealed from the start? And what does it really mean to mother a prince who might be losing his mind?

Playwright Lauren Gunderson, one of the most produced living playwrights in America, takes on Hamlet in her latest play, A Room in the Castle. This sharp, feminist reimagining follows Ophelia, her handmaid, and Queen Gertrude as they navigate the dangers of Elsinore, wrestling with the weight of survival, duty, and defiant hope in the face of chaos.

Gunderson, known for her witty and powerful storytelling in The Book of Will and The Half-Life of Marie Curie, discusses how she reclaims the voices of Hamlet‘s women, why Gertrude’s famous speech about Ophelia’s drowning might not be as simple as it seems, and how she crafted new ending that brings new light to Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy.

Lauren Gunderson on the Women of Hamlet

How does Shakespeare’s King Lear resonate in a world facing climate catastrophe? Novelist Julia Armfield explores this question in Private Rites, a novel set in a near-future London reshaped by rising sea levels. Following three sisters grappling with their father’s death, Private Rites weaves together themes of inheritance, power, and familial wounds—echoing Shakespeare’s tragic monarch while carving out a distinctly modern, queer perspective.

Armfield, author of Our Wives Under the Sea, discusses her fascination with disaster narratives, the inescapable dynamics of sibling relationships, and how Shakespeare’s work inspires her storytelling. From the storm in King Lear to the watery depths of her fiction, she reflects on how queerness, horror, and the climate crisis intersect in literature.

Julia Armfield is a fiction writer living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review, and Best British Short Stories in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award in 2018 and won the White Review Short Story Prize in 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of salt slow, a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize in 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize in 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea,  was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award in 2022 and won the Polari Prize in 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024.

Maria Marachowska (musician, composer, painter, graphic designer, blogger) works & lives in Berlin. Early ancestors from Ireland (Cork, Munster, Connacht) & Cornwall England (mother's side) and later they moved to Sweden, to Germany, Finland, to Lithuanian, to Poland & to Russia, they were aristocrats and fled to Siberia to survive. And from my father's side French and British settlers who moved to Siberia later. 

With her "Siberian Blues" Maria Marachowska has created an entirely new music style. Its strength lies precisely in the alternation between two opposite and equally stirring ways of expression: on the one hand the deliberate slowness that leaves room to the tones and allows them to linger on in the silent pauses, and on the other hand the always increasing ecstatic speed amounting to a trance-like, almost shamanic outburst. In her music and the soft timbre of her deep singing voice, this blue haze, that is Blues, takes on the shape of figures and moods, forms poetic words either from her own pen or inspired by world literature, and seems almost meditative. Whoever gets into this unique experience of "Siberian Blues" submerges far under the surface and comes across long lost feelings and emotions. This particular energy is transferred to the listener and has a cathartic effect.
The melody speaks, we believe to hear a continuous echo to her singing voice on her guitar, she is capable of a playing technique that in a wondrous way conveys the acoustic illusion of hearing several instruments out of one. In the general effect, there is no need of any other instrument but this single guitar, to produce the drive of a band. It is as if the tones were falling from a distant star, as William S.Burroughs described the divine power of music in his “Cities of the Red Night“.

Maria Marachowska, born on July 21st, 1980 in Omsk/ Siberia (Russia), spent her early childhood in Estergom/ Hungary (1980-1985) and in 1985 she moved with her family to the historic metropolis Kaliningrad/Königsberg (1985-1998), where she attended the E.T.A. Hoffmann music school for highly gifted children/ instrument: piano/1989-1993. In 1998, she returned to her native city Omsk/ Siberia (1998-2000) for a period of 2 years to complete her studies of fine arts. Since 2000 she has been living in Germany, since 2004 in Berlin, where she has also newly discovered music for herself in addition to her work as a fine artist and has created her personal, innovative music style of SIBERIAN BLUES. In 2007 she recorded her 1st album with 1st songs. In 2012 she released Album "HEART" (12 Songs). Although a convinced solo artist, she has also collaborated and performed with renowed musicians in the course of her professional career, i.a. with German music producer, film composer and bassist Micki Meuser (Micki Meuser is a German bass player, studio musician (Charlie Mariano) and music producer for bands such as Die Ärzte, Ideal, Ina Deter, Lemonbabies, among others) who has recorded and mixed her solo albums "EMOTIONS" (2015) and "STRANGER" (2016) and from 2016 - 2017 she recorded album "SILENCE" (2017) with British music producer, film composer and exceptional Hammond player Alan Reeves (Alan Reeves is a British film composer, music producer, and Hammond B3 virtuoso. In the course of his career he has received 35 international awards, including a Goldene Schallplatte. He became known for his work with the bands The Showtimers and Clinic as well as for the music for the films To Walk with Lions, The Call of the Wild: Dog of the Yukon, and Kill Bill Vol. 2. He has appeared with, among others, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, The Animals, The Who, Jimmy Page, David Bowie and The Beatles).

Since 2017 she is a member of GEMA and has submitted more than 200 songs and 300 instrumental compositions. In 2017 she released her solo album "MELANCHOLY". In 2018 she recorded by herself solo album "ABSTRACT DADA". Driven by an untiring creative energy, she constantly continues to develop and share her new musical work on various music and social media platforms both as carefully edited sound recordings and live transmissions and in the form of artistic music videos & albums created by herself. Das Staatsschauspiel Dresden bringt jährlich 25 Premieren heraus, hat ein umfangreiches Repertoire und erreicht mit über 850 Vorstellungen 250.000 Besucher im Jahr. Es gehört zu den am besten besuchten Häusern Deutschlands, Einladungen zu Festivals und Auszeichnungen zeugen von überregionaler Resonanz.
