"Yakety Sax" is a pop novelty instrumental jointly composed by 'James Q. "Spider" Rich' and 'Boots Randolph'.

Saxophonist Randolph popularized the selection in his 1963 recording, which reached number 35 on the pop charts. The piece is considered Randolph's signature work. The selection includes pieces of assorted fiddle tunes and was originally composed by Rich for a performance at a venue called The Armory in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The piece also quotes two bars each of "Entrance of the Gladiators" and "The Girl I Left Behind".

"Trumpet Blues & Cantabile" is a jazz solo for three trumpets accompanied by military- or concert band, composed by Jack Matthias, Harry James. This piece is highly popular in concert repertoire all around the world. This arrangement compliments the Big Band orchestration by adding a military band orchestration to the music library. Harry James played trumpet with the legendary Benny Goodman Band. After a time he left to form his own band and his Trumpet Blues & Cantabile was his first big hit. Enjoy!

'Guadalcanal March' is an excerpt from the score of 'Victory at Sea', a 1952 television series which was based on naval battles during World War II. The volcanic island of Guadalcanal, in the South Pacific, was the scene of the first large-scale U.S. invasion of a Japanese-held island.

The music was originally published for piano in 1952 by Williamson Music, Inc. (co-owned by Rodgers) and was arranged for band by Eric Leidzén in 1955. Rodgers's score for Victory at Sea was the first instrumental score conceived for television; having won the U.S. Naval Distinguished Public Service Award and a 1953 Emmy Award, it is still considered one of the best. I made this arrangement by commission from the SA Navy Bend in 2015.

Whispers of Reality and Reverie (2025) for Wind Orchestra

In March 1973, composer Wilfred Heaton (1918-2000) completed his best known work for brass band, Contest Music, from material sketched in the early 1950s. The work was rejected by the organisers of the National Brass Band Championships for whom Heaton had prepared it and it was not used in that competition until 1982, since when it has become one of the most cherished works of the 20th century brass band repertoire.

Heaton originally composed the three movements as separate exercises in compositional techniques. Instrumentation was not specified at that stage. He made the brass band score over 20 years after the initial composition. In later years, he observed that he was content for his band music to be rescored for other ensembles to encourage wider performances. 

With that wish in mind, Paul Hindmarsh has prepared a performing edition of Contest Music for symphony orchestra and also reimagined it for wind orchestra, reducing substantially the reliance on high brass tone. The layering of the Contest Music material is well suited to orchestral scoring.The influence of the methods of Hindemith and Walton is clear. Hindmarsh has created editions that accentuate the work's symphonic credentials as a neo-classical Sinfonietta – I. sonata allegro, II. slow cantabile, III. rondo.

A STEAMY RIDE, für Blasorchester / Grad 5 / Dauer: ca. 15‘


A STEAMY RIDE wurde Ende 2024 im Auftrag der „ Koninklijke Muziekvereniging Prinses Juliana „ aus Klaaswaal  komponiert.

In dieser Gegend, im sogenannten Hoeksche Waard wurde von 1898 bis 1904 eine Dampf-Tram gebaut, die bis in die Jahre 1956/57 betrieben wurde.

Die Dampf-Tram verkehrte u.a. auf der Strecke von Zuid Beijerland über Numansdorp und Klaaswaal nach Oud-Beijerland und dann über Barendrecht bis nach Rotterdam.

Unsere imaginäre musikalische Reise mit der ‚Stoomtram‘ beginnt in Klaaswaal, dem Heimatort des Auftraggeber-Orchesters. 

Zur Komposition:

Nach anfänglichen Startschwierigkeiten setzt sich die Trambahn nach dem 3. Versuch in Bewegung. Man hört das Stampfen der schweren Lok. Allmählich gewinnt die Tram an Geschwindigkeit und rollt durch die schöne Naturlandschaften des Hoeksche Waard.

Dann bremst der Zug ab und fährt in den Bahnhof Oud Beijerland ein. Die Zugglocke läutet, der abgelassene Dampf zischt und die Lok pfeift – der Zug steht im Bahnhof. 
Die Fahrgäste haben eine Verschnaufpause verdient. Ein ruhiges Thema erklingt – Zugidylle pur.

Oud Beijerland ist eine Stiftung des Grafen von Egmond aus dem Jahre 1559, der hier in der Gegend mit seiner Gemahlin Sabine von Beieren lebte.

Der Zug setzt sich erneut in Bewegung, die Pfeife ertönt ein zweites mal. Wir nehmen den Grafen von Egmond und seine Frau mit an Bord. 
Dazu ertönen Reminiszenzen aus Beethoven’s Egmont-Ouvertüre, gewissermassen als Willkommensgruß für den illustren Gast an Bord der Stoomtram.

Wieder geht die Fahrt durch die schöne Natur, vorbei an Windmühlen, Wiesen, Feldern und grossen Wasserflächen, bis schließlich ein feierlicher Choral die Einfahrt in den grossen Bahnhof von Rotterdam ankündigt. 
Das Ziel ist erreicht und damit ist auch der letzte Akkord von ‚ A STEAMY RIDE ‚ verklungen . . . . .

A STEAMY RIDE, for Wind Orchestra

Symphonietta consists of three movements and is inspired by the wealth of magnificent church and concert organs in the world. 

The work of Charles Widor, who with his marvellous organ symphonies has enthralled countless listeners, was an extra source of inspiration, whilst not wishing to imitate him. The atmosphere of this work is reminiscent of a large cathedral or church in which these types of works are usually played.

It begins with a sort of conversation between the different soloists and evolves into a beautiful melody. The sacred atmosphere in the 2nd theme forms the foundation for the rest of the work.

The playful 2nd movement, in which there are further variations on the themes, provides a good contrast to this.

In the 3rd movement the conversation returns, following which there is a build-up to the largest climax. The listener is thus left with an impressive image of a splendid organ.

Variations on Themes of Luigi Boccherini was composed for Wind Orchestra by Gregory Fritze. The duration is thirteen minutes, in two movements. It was arranged in 2025 from the five movement,  twenty-six minute piece Vadit Super Pozolum that was composed in 2016, also by Gregory Fritze.

I work as a freelance music consultant, writing about, editing and producing (audio, digital and print)  classical, contemporary classical and band music. Through PHM Publishing and Production I am making available a range of  band, orchestral and vocal music. Jennifer Bellor is hailed by Textura as a “that rare composer whose music manages to be instantly listenable and emotionally resonant without any compromise to its sophistication.”  Her compositional style, marked by a fusion of influences drawn from imagery, literature, and personal experiences, showcases a melodic richness underscored by jazz and pop-infused harmonies. Her music has been presented widely throughout the U.S. and abroad and has three acclaimed albums to her name. Her debut album Stay (2016), a melting pot of different music styles largely based on poetry, features instrumental and vocal chamber music with jazz and classical musicians. Reflections at Dusk (Innova Recordings, 2019), showcases instrumental music inspired by the Nevada sunsets and her third album, Oneira, features the percussion quartet, Clocks in Motion (Aerocade Music, 2022).

In anticipation of her forthcoming album, Long These Days, slated for release on August 16, 2024, through EMITHA’s prestigious label, Lexicon Classics, Bellor continues to push artistic boundaries. Collaborating with soprano Olivia Yokers, bass singer Norman Espinoza, and electric guitarist Tasos Peltekis, the album promises a captivating journey from dawn to night. Inspired by the timeless poetry of Christina Rossetti and Pablo Neruda, the album’s thematic depth is enriched by instrumental interludes crafted by Bellor on piano and Peltekis’ improvisations on electric guitar.

Bellor holds degrees from Eastman School of Music (PhD), Syracuse University (MM), and Cornell University (BA) and serves as Assistant Professor of Music Composition at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

SO Ka-wai obtained both undergraduate and M.Phil degree at Hong Kong Baptist University, majoring music composition under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Keyes and Dr. Christopher Coleman. His works have been premiered local and overseas, including Asian Composers League Conference and Festival (2011 in Taipei, 2015 in Philippines), Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival (Indonesia), the XVI World Saxophone Congress (Scotland) and Kagoshima Asian Youth Arts Festival (Japan). Moreover, his works were frequently selected as set pieces in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

Influenced from his musical training, SO Ka-wai is one of the young composers focusing on composing and arranging music for wind band. SO has received commissions for writing new works, such as wind orchestra suite “Four Supernatural Constellations”, saxophone concerto “Infatuazione” and symphonic poem “The Utterance of Wind”. During 2012-13, he was commissioned by Parson Wind Orchestra to arrange a set of Cantonpop songs of Kolor and premiered into the concerts. 

Apart from working as a composer, he is an active clarinetist. Learning clarinet from the age of thirteen with Mr. Cheung Wan, Mr. Andrew Simon and Mr. Martin Choy Kwok-tin while performed in the master-class conducted by Dr. David Pino during studying undergraduate at HKBU, he was a member of Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band and the Klappen Ensemble. He is now the concertmaster of the Parsons Wind Orchestra with assisting the coaching and managing duties in the ensemble.
