Zepeda turned pro in 2009 and has won 28 contests via knockout. In 2015, he suffered a dislocated shoulder when facing Englishman Terry Flanagan for the vacant WBO lightweight title and lost to Jose Ramirez in 2019 with the WBC super lightweight title on the line. 

Following a seven-fight unbeaten streak, Zepeda again lost a bout for the WBC super lightweight belt, this time against Regis Prograis. He recovered in his previous outing, beating Neeraj Goyat in March. 

A title unification fight is set for Florida, while a young star is ready to showcase his skills in the main event of a Matchroom card on September 23. Richardson Hitchins faces Jose Zepeda, while Jessica McCaskill and Sandy Ryan compete in a welterweight unification fight. 

Among the bouts featured on Hitchins vs Zepeda undercard, Houston-based Austin Williams (14-0 10 KOs) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Steve Rolls (22-2 12 KOs) of Toronto, Canada go head to head in a 10-rounder for the IBF North American middleweight strap. Plus, Cuban Orestes Velazquez (7-0 6 KOs) of Miami, Florida and Mohamed Soumaoro (13-1 6 KOs) of Montreal, Canada by way of Conakry, Guinea clash in a 10-rounder at super lightweight.

Zepeda is a veteran professional boxer with a record of 36-3 with two no-contests and an impressive 27 wins coming via KO. He is now 34 years old and has challenged for a world title twice–once in 2015 for the WBO lightweight strap, and the second time was in 2019 when he fought for the WBC light welterweight title.

“Chon” is listed at 5’8” with a 70.5” reach and fights out of the southpaw stance. Since 2010, he’s collaborated with famed trainer Robert Alcazar, the main coach for Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya.

On the top of the prelims, Khalil Coe (6-0-1, 4 KOs) of Jersey City, New Jersey faces off Kenmon Evans (10-1-1, 3 KOs) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida in an eight-rounder at light heavyweight. Also on the card, Jeovanny Estela (12-0, 3 KOs) of Orlando, Florida takes on Luis Caraballo Ramos (6-1-1, 6 KOs) of Carolina, Puerto Rico in an eight-rounder at super welterweight. In addition, Jasmine Artiga (10-0-1, 5 KOs) of Tampa, Florida goes up against Haley Pasion (2-4) of Waipahu, Hawaii in an eight-rounder at super flyweight.

25-year-old Hitchins (16-0, 7 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York looks to improve his unbeaten record, retain his strap and rise up in rankings. 34-year-old Zepeda (36-3 27 KOs) of Long Beach, California eyes his second win in a row. In addition, the vacant WBC “Silver” and WBO NABO belts are on the line.

Hitchins is an upcoming professional boxing prospect with a record of 16-0 and seven wins coming from KO. Now 25, he recently joined Matchroom Boxing, following a short tenure with Mayweather Promotions as a new professional.

"I'm just disappointed with my performance, I think the right hand he kept hitting me with I couldn't get out of the way," Joyce told BT Sport in the ring post-fight.

"Respect to Zhilei Zhang, it was a good fight but I think I could have done better, I think because I haven't fought a southpaw for so long. Credit to him because he was a good fighter, and I gave it my all. I think I could do better but it's just disappointing.

‘Juggernaut’ instantly turned his attention to a rematch, activating the clause in his contract as he aims to win back his WBO interim heavyweight title. 

Going to this contest, Joe Joyce had last fought 6 months and 22 days ago, while Zhilei Zhang's last outing had been 7 months and 26 days ago.

Valenzuela (21-4, 20 KOs) is a six-year pro who has given stiff tests to Alexis Rocha, Souleymane Cissokho and Bakhram Murtazaliev. The 24-year-old Mexican is coming off a third-round TKO victory against Daniel Vega in April.

The 20-year-old will make his second 2023 appearance after a 10-round unanimous decision win over Ronald Cruz during Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend in June.
