Jury refuses to convict

The fourth conference in the series Aula Árabe Universitaria will be given by Gilbert Achcar (University of London).

The war that Israel has been waging in Gaza since October 2023 is of tremendous historical significance. Gilbert Achcar, a professor of Development Studies and International Relations at SOAS (University of London), will be discussing how it has become a major turning point in Palestinian and Middle Eastern history, having an impact comparable to that of the Nakba ("Catastrophe," in Arabic) in 1948, which led to the entire region's destabilization . No Arab-Israeli "peace process" can be considered in any way plausible from here on, and nearby Europe will be directly affected.

However, according to Achcar, the Gaza war is also an important turning point in the history of international relations. The fact that it is occurring at the same time as the war in Ukraine has irreparably exposed the double standards in Western attitudes. By condoning a genocidal attack on a powerless population, with the United States even taking full part, Atlanticist liberalism has lost what little credibility it still retained, thus invalidating the attempt to give the New Cold War an ideological dimension.

Representing both programs, Johanna M. Lems will be participating in the conference. She is a professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and will be introducing the speaker and the session, along with Ángel Rodríguez García-Brazales, a professor of Economic Analysis and coordinator of the UAM bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, who will be providing an initial reaction/commentary after the conferences, before opening up a debate with students and the public, to be moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe's Training and Economics Coordinator.

Gilbert Achcar
Gilbert Achcar grew up in Lebanon and has worked as a researcher and professor in Beirut, Paris and Berlin. Since 2007, he has been a professor of Development Studies and International Relations at SOAS (School of Oriental and Asian Studies), at the University of London. He has authored many articles and books, including: The People Want: A Radical Exploration of the Arab Uprising (Saqi Books, 2013); and Morbid Symptoms: Relapse in the Arab Uprising (Stanford University Press, 2016). Aula Árabe 6.4. The meaning of the war against Gaza in history

This fifth session in the series Aula Árabe Universitaria will include a screening of the short-subject film "Blood Like Water" and a meeting and later debate with the director of the short-subject film, Palestinian journalist Dima Hamdan.

"Blood Like Water", a short film shot in Palestine, is based on the true stories of gay Palestinian men who have been blackmailed by the Israeli intelligence and forced to work as secret agents for the occupation for fear of being outed to their families and communities.

The script was developed over two years after a lengthy research process, not just to ascertain the facts about this open secret, but also to determine what really needs to be said and explored about this situation, and who should be concerned with this story.

The film was released in the summer of 2023, just a few months before the genocide perpetrated against Gaza. To date, it’s been selected by 40 festivals worldwide, winning many awards, including the IRIS Film Prize, the most important prize for short-subject LGBTQ+ films around the world.

After the film screening, we will be holding a debate with the director, Dima Hamdan, revolving around the creation of the story, its impact -if any- on local audiences, and how to position storytelling today when an entire society is facing annihilation Dima Hamdan will be accompanied by Khalil Talhaoui, an artist and PhD student whose research delves into the blackmail and technology traps suffered by Palestinians under occupation.

Organized with the cooperation of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Communication and with the Master’s degree in International Journalism at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. The session will be introduced by Alejandra Val Cubero, a professor of Audiovisual Communication at the UC3M, with an initial talk and commentary by Amal Abu-Warda, a professor of International Political Communication by Geographic Areas in the URJC Master’s degree program. The debate will be moderated by Karim Hauser, coordinator of Casa Árabe’s Cultural Programs.

Lebanese-American Political science professor Asad AbuKhalil talks about Israel's U.S.-backed genocidal war on the people of Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. He also shares memories of interviewing the slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. AbuKhalil also reflects on the elections and the difference (or lack thereof) between Joe Biden and Donald Trump when it comes to foreign policy. 

But first Omali Yeshitela, the founder of the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) and Uhuru Movement discusses why he and two other members of Uhuru have been convicted of conspiring to act as unregistered Russian agents, in an outrageous miscarriage of justice and a McCarthyite attack on free speech. Given that Joe Biden has pardoned his own son, something he promised not to do, he might as well pardon people who actually deserve it, like Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu Jamal, Julian Assange, and the Uhuru Movement members, including Omali Yeshitela. He should of course also pardon anyone serving jail for the crimes committed by Hunter.

Born in Tyre, Lebanon, Asad AbuKhalil received his BA and MA in political science from the American University of Beirut, and his PhD in comparative politics from Georgetown University. He is the author of Historical Dictionary of Lebanon, Bin Laden, and The Battle for Saudi Arabia, among other titles, and his articles on Middle Eastern politics and culture have appeared in publications throughout the world. AbuKhalil lives in California, where he is a professor of political science at California State University, Stanislaus. 

Omali Yeshitela is the founder of the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) and Uhuru Movement. In 1968 Chairman Yeshitela founded The Burning Spear newspaper which is still published today. He has authored numerous articles, pamphlets and books.  Chairman Omali made “reparations a household word” with the International Tribunal on Reparations for African People which was held in Brooklyn, New York in 1982, finding that African people are owed 4.1 trillion dollars for stolen labor in the U.S. alone. The Chairman founded the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement in 1991 as a revolutionary mass organization to defend the democratic rights of the African working class. Today, Chairman Omali Yeshitela, as the leader of the African Socialist International, speaks to his growing base around the world and leads the worldwide movement for the liberation of Africa and African people everywhere.
