In 1996, my wife stretched a canvas four feet by eight and filled it with dots of paint, one after another, until our family appeared. Hana in the middle, Bean and me on each side. It was a big painting, too big maybe, but it held us together.

Years later, Katrina came. The canvas sat blank, waiting for inspiration, when the storm rose up and marked it in her own hand. Scarred by water, stained by mold, but still hanging.

This is the story of that canvas. A story of family, of loss, of rebuilding. A canvas not painted by brush, but by a hurricane.
