We Came to This World to Awaken to the Eternal

It's been 10 years since my Guru passed on. One of the Sanskrit verses I learnt from her was the NIRVANA SHATKAM, which I offer as my tribute to her cherished memory🌺

A young boy of 8 years wandering in the Himalayas seeking a ‘Guru’  met Seer Gaudapada who asked him ‘WHO ARE YOU?’ Adi Shankara answered with the NIRVANA SHATKAM, delving into the essence of ‘Advaita’, non-duality. Hearing it, Seer Gaudapada accepted him as his disciple. This was around 800 CE. 

NIRVANA is complete equanimity, SHATKAM is six stanzas, these verses speak of the unattached, infinite soul.

"Chidaananda Rupah Shivoham Shivoham...."
I am bliss Supreme, not born to die
I am Shiva, the Lord of Eternal joy.

मनोबुद्ध्यहङ्कार चित्तानि नाहं
न च श्रोत्रजिह्वे न च घ्राणनेत्रे ।
न च व्योम भूमिर्न तेजो न वायुः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम् ॥१॥

Neither the mind nor the intellect am I,
Unconscious of self, beyond life’s what and why.
I am not the ear nor the tongue’s little cry,
Nor the nose that smells, not the sight of the eye.
Land I am not nor the blue vault of the sky,
Neither light nor even the blowing wind am I.
For I am bliss supreme and not born to die,
I am Shiva, the Lord of Eternal Joy and Sigh


न च प्राणसंज्ञो न वै पञ्चवायुः
न वा सप्तधातुः न वा पञ्चकोशः ।
न वाक्पाणिपादं न चोपस्थपायु

Neither the breath of life nor the five vital airs am I,
The seven elements and five sheaths do not me signify.
I am neither sound nor speech nor even a cry,

न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहौ

Neither love nor hatred can live in my eye,
Nor can greed or temptation make me vie,
Pride and jealousy I have learnt to decry,
And riches and religion I have sought to deny.
Desire does not tempt me as honey does the fly,
Salvation has no charm to soul without a sigh.

न पुण्यं न पापं न सौख्यं न दुःखं
न मन्त्रो न तीर्थं न वेदा न यज्ञाः ।

To merit and demerit I do not testify,
Pain and pleasure leave me cold and dry.
Neither prayer nor pilgrimage I need to purify,
I chant not the Veda or with sacrifice gratify.
I am not the food which home and altar sanctify,

Transcend Your Own Mind and the World Will Not Trouble You

During this morning with Moojibaba, we experience spontaneous existence as it unfolds in the presence of the Master. Throughout all of the encounters that take place, we witness and experience the grace of Self-knowledge: where knowing and being are one.

“We are meant to find the Unity first, and then it manifests through the diversity. But we are attracted to the diversity, and we lose sight of the Unity.

Open to the possibility that God Consciousness is unlimited. Open to the possibility of welcoming the unlimited in yourself. You already carry the 
seed—you are the seed."

Find the Eden of Your Heart

This inquiry is an urgent investigation into what is true beyond all appearances. Moojibaba emphasises the need for a mature seeker of Truth to be willing to let go of attachment to personal identity—not as a mental or philosophical exercise—and discover that which is beyond the relative world.

With compassion and clarity, he guides us to see that much of what we consider to be our 'self'—our thoughts, feelings and even the person we think we are—are impermanent and unreliable. The seeming solidity of our personal identity is questioned, revealing that it is ultimately perceived by something far more stable, pure, and timeless.

‘Nothing is going to satisfy you—Thank God! Nothing in the universe is going to satisfy you. Nothing at all. Until you find your Self.’

How to Find That Which Cannot Be Seen?

Moojibaba invites us into one of the most radical exercises to transcend the force of the mind: the I-watching exercise. 

By not following the constant stream of mind activity and returning to the space of witnessing, we begin to see through the layers of identity and revert to our true being—the essence of God within. 

'Each time the mind arises, don't let it grow, don't water it; instead, bring it back into the emptiness from where the seeing of it is coming.
The outcome of this is the Oneness of Reality. 
You are this Reality. 

What you are doing here is making a shortcut to freedom. 

This is a Master Pointing to that which is the Eternal about our Self.'

Master Pointing to the Eternal Self

One Single Reality— This is an expression that I heard from nonduality teacher Francis Lucille ages ago, but in time I've come to understand this phrase a little differently. I think that's how it has to be for all of us, to come to our own understandings, to make our own discoveries, and then perhaps try to find some way to express it.

One Single Reality

In a climate of urgency and earnestness, Moojibaba invites us to recognise that which is beyond the phenomenal mind, person and world. From here, we can see the unreality of everything that appears, including the limited identity that we usually take ourselves to be. We are encouraged to use all situations that life brings to recede to the pure place of being and confirm that we are the untouched witness. 

“We are here for this: to clarify, to verify inside yourself that which can never go—that which alone is Eternal and perfect. I have the delight in my heart to tell you: it is you. But now it has to be proven.”

These tracks are contemplations or guided meditations that come from exploring present moment experience. What you discover in these explorations might be very different than what I’m suggesting, and it's important for you to honor that, and follow it wherever it takes you.

When we discover something to be true then it has the possibility of changing us in a fundamental way. It has the possibility of awakening us to a new way of being. That's what counts. In a moment of discovery there’s often the feeling of surprise, even astonishment. 

Some of the meditations are directed toward people who are new to exploring life in this way, and some are directed to the old dogs like me who have been wandering these woods for a long time. Hopefully someday I will find a way to make it clear which is which, though I'm not sure it matters.

And as to the title of this page, Essence of Awareness is a small online group of friends exploring together this precious human life. It's about making discoveries and awakening to real freedom, real love, and real happiness. What else could we want?
