On Friday, July 12th, the Shock Waves gang, Rob Galluzzo, Rebekah McKendry, and Elric Kane, were fortunate enough to host a special screening of the 1988 Mexican horror film DON'T PANIC at the Billy Wilder Theater in Los Angeles in association with the UCLA Film & Television Archive department as part of a month long screening series from AGFA. (The American Genre Film Archive) We're joined by AGFA's Joseph Ziemba, Bret Berg, Sebastian Alvarez del Castillo and Alicia Coombs. We discuss DON'T PANIC, the Doris Wishman catalog, the inner workings of finding and restoring these exploitation films, TAMMY & THE T-REX, and much much more. Wildfire Radio Show #20 [Guest DJ: O.P Groover]

Bret Berg from the Museum of Home Video and the American Genre Film Archive joins us and he has chosen a pair of made for TV movies ranging from 70s horror to 1990s ripped-from-the-headlines true crime. 

Our first feature is GARGOYLES (1972) one of the many TV terrors that scarred Gen-Xer childhoods. Cornel Wilde and Jennifer Salt are a father-daughter team of occult researchers who discover a race of living gargoyles in the caves of New Mexico. Former SF 49er and LA Ram Bernie Casey in full-body Sam Winston make-up effects plays the winged-stuff of nightmares as the Gargoyles' leader + Scott Glenn as a young dirt bike punk! 

Then, Kellie Martin is an ambitious nerd girl who murders mean girl Tori Spelling in DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER aka A FRIEND TO DIE FOR, the most watched TV movie of 1994, if Wikipedia is to be believed. The film is based on the true story of 15-year old Kirsten Costas who was stabbed to death by a classmate, Bernadette Protti, on June 23, 1984. While this movie is a departure from what we'd usually program on OMFYS, something about it dredged up Cory's memories of being accused of horrible animal mutilations because he was the only goth kid at his high school, and Bob found parallels to a murder near San Francisco that his mom was briefly suspected of. This movie may have been even more traumatizing than GARGOYLES!

In the opening segment, Bob, Bret and Cory talk about other made-for-TV horror movies, and the inspiration behind The Museum of Home Video, his weekly "found-footage variety show for stoners, seekers, archivists and drinkers." Bob brings up The California Music Channel, the San Francisco Bay Area's public access answer to MTV, which is something he hasn't thought about since the 80s. Cory counters with The Box, Los Angeles' music video request show. Is there a hyperlocal Chicago or Milwaukee version of MTV? We want to know!

And you don’t stop and you wont stop! Hot on the heels of the Bring Back the Funk Remixed single comes a blistering trio of remixes of Omegaman’s disco soul funk jam Gonna Be alright.

The connections and collaborations between All Good Funk Alliance and Omegaman go all the way to the beginning, and the two artists mutual appreciation of all things funky is encapsulated in this remix. AGFA have rebuilt the track from the ground up, adding some crisp synth work, electro effects, beefed up drums and a sick boogie-on-down rollout to the end. This remix takes the retro funky disco grooves of the original and transforms them into a DISCOTRON 3000 from the future!

The second remix on this single is by Budapest’s own DJ Clairvo, who has done a few remixes on Fort Knox Recordings over the years. This vocal heavy remix highlights the soaring vocals of Katherine Vavahea sitting on top of a bed super funkdafied keys, horns and percussion. This is one of those rare remixes that digs deep into the stems, and pulls out something entirely different than the original composition, A+ grade for creativity here. Mama’s here to testify, “it’ll be alright, it’ll be alright”.
