Today, you are going to learn whether it is worth to go to college or not. Who should go to college and why?

We are going to compare the old way of learning vs the new way of learning stuff.

There are just a few professions that require a degree like a lawyer and a doctor. Most professions don’t require a degree. You can learn them on your own.

90% of the stuff that I talk about as a business owner has nothing to do with the stuff that I studied at university. Everything that I have learned is from my mentors and doing business. Does that mean that university is absolutely useless?

The teachers in university teach based on books. They give you a bunch of books to read and you have no idea what is actually happening in the real world.

Even if you study for a business degree in college, you have no chance to succeed in business without any extra help outside of college.

If you want to get results in business, you have to focus 90% on implementation and 10% on theory.

Universities offer a whole different environment of doing business. First of all, you have to get experience for a few years and only then you can dive into the real world and start a business.

On the other hand, you can choose the second option and start a business almost immediately. You can hire people who have learned all that. You can pay people who have learned the theory, you can pay people who have good grades. 

You can pay people who have done all that hard work while you did a different type of hard work that is higher leverage. That is learning sales and real world business skills. There is no way you can learn these skills in college.

The first and most important thing you need to learn to start a business is sales. Those sales can bring you some money which you can use to hire people who can take care of the delivery of the projects.

There are people with no magical education who are not that smart. However, they are able to close deals for thousands of dollars because they have mastered the most important skill in business – Sales.

I have a friend who owns a restaurant and he finds people from other restaurants who can introduce the processes that work in his small business.

His skill is more valuable. He is the one taking the risk. He is the one who pays the salaries and he is the one who will go out of business if something fails while the other people can find another job.

If you are going to study business, do it outside of college. Hire the cheap degree people who do the work for you.

You are going to get out of college with very small amount of knowledge to start a business. The skills that you learn in college are too general and it is hard to apply them in the real world.

It’s not about what you sell. It’s about how you create the business that sells it. You do not have to be a cheap freelancer trapped in an online job.

You have to commit to building a business. Otherwise, you will end up in a self-created job. Find a business model that works and stick to it no matter what.

I do not want you to be a freelancer who does everything. 

You can’t be good at everything. You have to pick one thing and become really good at it. The market rewards people who focus. The people who make the most money and have the most successful business are the ones who commit to what they do and do not have any distractions.

Just knowing what to sell does not allow you to make a successful business. 

After you figure out what to sell, you need to master negotiations and expectations of clients. These are super important skills in business.

You may have clients who call you in the middle of the night and give you work. 

A good strategy is to under promise and over deliver. That way you can make your clients happier than expected. If you do that, they will start referring you to other people and your business will live only on referrals.

I recommend you learn from peers who are one or two years ahead of you. These are people who truly understand the problems you are facing as a new business owner or freelancer.

The Trial-and-Error Period of Business Risk Taking

Some other entrepreneur friends of mine and I started our businesses right in the middle of the recent economic recession. This was around 2008-2010. It was pretty hardcore, I won’t lie.

We didn’t know if our work was going to succeed. Everyone was telling us how tough it was going to be and the risks were too high. People told us to get a job. Some of the people who started back then actually did end up in a job… Though those who didn’t quit are still in business today.

What we learned from this trial-and-error period was how much risk you should take. Now, if you don’t know how to gauge how much risk to take, your business is likely not to grow. Every single entrepreneur I know who doesn’t take any risk usually sees a period of stagnation over months or even years.

These non-risk-taking types commonly treat their business like a vanity or lifestyle business than a serious one. And when the next recession hits, you can bet that they’re not going to have a lot of momentum to weather the storm. They’re unlikely to survive.
