For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat. "The Holdovers"

"The Holdovers" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received some of Alexander Payne's best reviews since "Sideways." It later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival to similar acclaim and was the runner-up for the Toronto People's Choice Award. Re-uniting Paul Giamatti with Payne, the film is one of the rare films from Payne that neither he nor his collaborator Jim Taylor wrote together. Screenwriter David Hemingson was kind enough to spend a few moments speaking with us about the script, how he came on board the project, working with Payne, and more. (MILDLY SPOILER-FREE, NO SIGNIFICANT DETAILS)

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR and I think it’s obvious what this month’s overarching theme will be and it might get a little offbeat but on Wednesdays (at least) we will be going to the movies for our picks and it looks like there is a lot of good looking flicks to be seen. Although…”Wonka”??? Not sure if we want to contribute to the “Fantastic Beasts” version of the Roald Dahl-verse and the new Aquaman looks like even more of a video game cut scene than the first one did though anything featuring an Octopus playing drums automatically gets an additional half point. To get our theater selections started off on the right foot we set out for an actual Christmas movie and we happened to have caught it in 35mm at our local independent movie theater. We’re discussing Alexander Payne’s brand new “70’s” movie “The Holdovers” starring Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph & Dominic Sessa. An unlikable and over academic prep school professor must keep ward of a troublesome and emotionally isolated student during Christmas break while in the company of the school cook who is mourning the loss of a son. Thankfully, this wry story of solitude isn’t some overtly saccharine dramatic piece. It’s sweetness feels more realistic. How does Alexander Payne’s latest hold up? Let us tell you all about it (WITH NO SIGNIFICANT DETAILS) unless you’re some sort of penis cancer in human form.

Alexander Payne evokes the Seventies in form and aesthetic in The Holdovers, a comedy-drama about the students and staff forced to stay at a New England boarding school over Christmas. It exudes charm and, over time, warmth, as the frosty relationship between student and teacher thaws, Payne handles the meandering tone beautifully, and it's full of good jokes. For José, it doesn't quite reach the level of the best in its genre; for Mike, it's a good genre film elevated by some mysterious cinematic alchemy he doesn't understand.

De zevende aflevering van het vierde seizoen van Cinepraatjes, de podcast van Cinemaatjes. We blikken vooruit op ons 7-jarig bestaan. We staan nog even stil bij het overlijden van Shelley Duvall en Donald Sutherland. Het is even geleden, want William is op vakantie geweest naar San Francisco. William heeft daar in een kast van een platenzaak een aantal soundtrack platen gekocht en in een Café gezeten waar Francis Ford Coppola het script van ‘The Godfather’ heeft geschreven. We kwamen elkaar ook tegen op een platenbeurs in Tilburg en ook daar kochten we soundtracks. MCU haalt een noodgreep uit door Robert Downey Jr. te presenteren als Dr. Doom. We hebben het even over stemacteurs die aan het staken zijn. JP zag de trailer van de nieuwe Kevin Smith film ‘The 4:30 Movie’ en dat gaf hem toch weer hoop. We zijn weer gevraagd om te jureren op het BUT Film Festival en we zullen daar zeker ook te vinden zijn. Marino schuift ons weer een sonnet voor, waarvan wij proberen te raden waar het over gaat. William zag een aantal films in het vliegtuig waaronder ‘The Holdovers’ van Alexander Payne. JP wil het even kort over ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ hebben en wat uitgebreider over ‘Longlegs’ met o.a. Nicolas Cage en William wil ook nog kort ‘Marcel The Shell with Shoes On’ bespreken, die JP heeft afgezet. We trokken weer eens iets uit de VHS Slasher kast nl. ‘Silent Scream’. In onze Special bespreken we Teen movies en specifieker High School films. Uiteraard beantwoorden we ook weer vragen van luisteraars over o.a. zomerfilms, podcasten op locatie en/of met gasten, product placement in films, acteurs die we niet kunnen uitstaan en wanneer een film te ver gaat.
