This episode is hosted by Fountain Court senior junior Nik Yeo. It looks at algorithms and, in particular, the distinction between deterministic and non-deterministic algorithms. 

Nik is joined by three other specialists in this area, who all bring a different perspective to the discussion. They are:

•	Julia Smithers Excell who is a partner in the financial services regulatory team of White & Case. She has extensive experience across a number of areas including fintech and artificial intelligence, topics on which she is regularly invited to speak at conferences and seminars. Julia is a working group member of the Financial Markets Law Committee and contributes to various publications covering topics including the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, fintech and financial market infrastructure. 

•	Minesh Tanna who is a solicitor at Simmons & Simmons where he specialises in technology disputes and is also the firm’s global AI Lead. He regularly advises clients on AI-related legal and ethical issues and is frequently invited to speak at seminars and workshops on the subject. Minesh has recently been appointed Chair of the newly established AI Group of the Society for Computers and Law. 

•	Jacob Turner who is a junior barrister at Fountain Court. He is a former solicitor-advocate, having previously worked for Cleary Gottlieb, and has a particular specialism in technology disputes and more specifically, artificial intelligence. Jacob is the author of Robot Rules, published by Macmillan, and a contributing author to The Law of Artificial Intelligence, published by Sweet & Maxwell. He has worked on a number of cases in this area and has advised governments, regulators and businesses on their AI governance. 

Nik himself was previously a solicitor with Slaughter and May and has a long-standing interest and specialism in fintech and technology, having acted in a market-leading cryptocurrency and algorithmic trading case before the Singapore International Court of Appeal, while currently acting in a range of other cryptocurrency disputes, as well as advising on “smart contracts”, technology disputes and financial regulation. He has published articles on various aspects of cryptocurrency and algorithmic trading. 

Topics discussed in this episode include the distinction between deterministic and non-deterministic algorithms, and issues arising for both types of algorithms in doctrinal law (that is, causes of action) and regulatory law, both from a UK perspective and EU perspective.

As we dig into William’s insights into how being “extremely online” has informed our social behaviors in the past several decades, his most cutting criticisms are aimed at contemporary political activism — both in its theory and praxis — and how even the most die-hard eco-radicals, anti-capitalists, and leftists of all stripes are (not-so) subtly impacted by the pervasive algorithmic logic of being “extremely online.” William’s insights including a recognition of who stands to benefit from this massive shift in how we process and react to information, and most importantly in how this dynamic inherently limits how we imagine and actively manifest a post-capitalist future.

Instinctive, Proficient, Creative… in three words, you can summarize the immense work of Los Angeles-based Producer/Actor, Cryptex. 

Born Tyler Chase in Boston, MA, raised the smoky mountains of North Carolina, crafted in the halls of London, and cultured by the streets of Los Angeles - Cryptex has had an artistic edge since his youth. Growing up in public schooling, and eventually deciding to home school and graduate early to jump-start his acting path, Tyler’s childhood was blessed with myriad musical and creative influences. The son of two radio professionals, they would listen to everything from Sting, Nora Jones, Michael Jackson, to more recent acts like Missy Elliot, even a broken Nelly CD that he and his mother found in a parking lot. 

With a passion for the acting, Tyler didn’t start out as most of his fellow producer peers. His first acting role was at the age of 11. Tyler went on to be featured in dozens of film and television appearances —  most notably a recurring role on AMC’s, “The Walking Dead” and guest star role on FOX’s, “Sleepy Hollow”. It wasn’t until 2008 when he heard edIT’s track “Crunk De Gaulle,” that Tyler first heard the ticking of BPMs inside of his head, that would eventually become Cryptex. The tune was unlike  anything he’d ever heard--  it went so deep into his bones that he spent the next few days going through every track of edIT’s, Glitch Mob, and dozens of others just to keep this feeling alive. This moment is when 
Tyler knew he was destined to make music, to create what he feels within and to bring out the world inside his soul. 

His first big break came in 2014, when MTV hired Cryptex to assist Patrick Claire and his team at Elastic.tv to create remixes for every nomination category for the 2014 MTV VMAs. 

Most recently, Cryptex released his debut album, “End Silence” capturing the ears of glitch enthusiasts the world over. With a glitchy precision, Cryptex is set to debut his sophomore EP, “ Nightwatch” releasing  this November on Friday the 13th, via his own label, Orphic Recordings.
