"Roads" is an original song about the gift that is life—our past (including birth) present and future, and our search for meaning and purpose. There is also an implied future beyond the plane of existence in which we presently live. 
"All we can hope for is we'll get to do this again. There are so many roads ahead..."

Illusions is an observation of some people's propensity to pretend to be someone or something they're not, when for whatever reasons (insecurity, health, money, confidence, ambition, motivation, impatience, responsibilities, time, and more), they haven't been able to authentically step into those shoes, or due to more nefarious motivations, they're hiding their darker tendencies.

Here we go again... as I reimagine this classic gem with a touch of folk magic. I guess it's something like when nostalgia meets innovation somehow. As always, I love to pay homage to the past while embracing the future.

Janice Keegan is a singer songwriter born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in a northwest suburb.

Her interest in singing began in adolescence. Early vocal influences include Cass Elliot, Stevie Wonder, and Joni Mitchell. The latter is evident in much of her early work. Later forays into jazz and blues changed her style and her vocal delivery.

Keegan’s evocative and memorable singing style has impressed audiences since the early ‘90s.  A seasoned performer, Keegan is noted for her vocal range, fluid phrasing, creative improvisation, impeccable intonation, and expressive yet sensuous sound. Whether energizing the audience with a full on swing tune or moving them to tears with a love ballad, she never disappoints. Her passion for the music is contagious, as is her warmth and sense of humor.

In 1989 Keegan, along with guitarist David Poinsett and bassist Glenn Wolff, formed the Janice Keegan Band. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by Laurie Sears on saxophone and flute, and Hank Dempsey on drums. Together they played jazz, blues, and original music in and around Traverse City for five years. The last three of those years saw the JKB as house band every Friday night at the Park Place Hotel in downtown Traverse City. They also played to a sold out house in Traverse City’s Milliken Auditorium, where Keegan has performed several times since.

With the creation of the Janice Keegan Trio in 1994, which included guitarist Ron Getz and Glenn Wolff, she began focusing on jazz standards from a span of five decades, including a variety of ballads, bossas, Latin, swing, and blues rhythms, as well as some original compositions of various genres. With the addition of Dave Wall on drums, the trio evolved into the Janice Keegan Quartet.

Eventually, band members began exploring other musical partnerships. Keegan’s solo ventures proved invaluable in expanding her range and repertoire. 

In October of 2015, Keegan released her first album—“FIredance,” with a successful concert at Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City. She wrote lyrics and music for 13 of the 14 songs on the CD, and performed the material with a noteworthy cast of band members (nine in all) to a riveted audience. The album is a very personal and expressive body of work that speaks to navigating the peaks and valleys of life’s journey through pleasure and pain—or what she refers to as our firedance.

Keegan continues to be a regular part of the music scene in Traverse City (performing with a variety of musicians), sings at special events, and makes guest appearances on numerous recordings. Furthermore, she has been a guest vocalist at notorious jazz haunts from Detroit and Chicago to Greenwich Village. 
Her performances still lean toward jazz and blues, but now include several original compositions that would be more accurately attributed to the Jazz Pop or Pop realms. 

Keegan's newest material was written as part of an ongoing exploration into fresh musical terrain, and is difficult to cast in any specific genre. She is releasing it here on Soundcloud, as well as on Bandcamp.

Ropatt (aka Ron Patton) is a dynamic pop, jazz, and hip-hop artist who first made waves with his 2003 album Biggie Was Here. Hailing from Michigan, Ron dove into songwriting during college and became a staff writer for the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland team. 

Co-founding Baywest Records in Northern California, his work as a producer and arranger has been featured on major outlets like Oxygen and Animal Planet. Ropatt is also an author, having written Fables & Proverbs: Songwriting's Secret Weapon and Alternate Reels: Recasting Iconic Movie Roles, both available on Amazon.
