In The Sunlight

This song happened by complete accident. We set up our instruments in Fran’s basement—mics and recording gear chaperoned by Paul Bennett—with the mentality of “let’s make some demos and see what happens.” 55 came out of nowhere and everything fell into place in real time. Collin had the lyrics and melody, Trevor had the guitar riff, Fran had the drums locked down, and Simon had the organ roaring. Next thing we knew, Paul Bennett assumed the role of producer and our buddy (and frequent extra guitarist for live shows), Drew Stolz, arrived to provide a guitar harmony and the first guitar solo in the tune. We had the song fully recorded. No metronome, all the microphone bleed you can get, and the true sound of The Erly working together in their natural state.

We decided to include another song from that session with the release of 55. One of Fran’s tunes called “Oh Well.” Consider it a B-Side, the ying to the yang of 55 (or vice versa). Fran was behind the drum kit at rehearsal one day and the melody and words came to him out of thin air. Trevor came up with the accompanying riff and the song was basically ready to be recorded within ten minutes.

Singer and lead guitars for “Ritual Suns” An entertainer of sorts, spent many years performing solo & in various groups across America, opening for national acts to local bands. I picked up a guitar for a few reasons…Randy Rhoads, Angus Young & Stevie Ray Vaughan. As well as the need to transmute pain into something greater than my circumstances. I started writing and singing to stay alive, influenced by the works of Chris Cornell, Bill Withers, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Jack White, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Stevie Wonder and Sly & the Family Stone.

Strangers in the same old crowd, cigarettes on the rebound, The Erly is Michiana's main source of jazz rock and indie-groove. Formed in 2018, The Erly features an ensemble of musicians that all contribute to lead vocals and solos. Latest album "Culture Fever" finds the nostalgic, indie groove combo at their most retro, with enough chutzpah to keep it from being tacky.  Follow up single "OH10" was released on April 24th, 2024. Trading in platform shoes for cowboy boots, OH10 reveals The Erly's roots with a stripped back, rambunctious arrangement, and portrays a story about how they were once stranded in Ohio.

The great news is the song co written with Mike Baldwin, Can't Lose Those Memories, has won the Country category in the UK Songwriting Contest 2024.  I've had a few final places but never a win, I'm a very happy man.  Thank you for wonderful lyrics Mike.
I have been a guitar player and lead vocalist since the age of 13, performing in bands of varying genres including Pop, Heavy Rock, Folk & Modern Country.  Main instrument is the guitar, influenced by a variety of artistes and styles including Mark Knopfler, The Eagles, Don Williams, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Deep Purple and Santana. This has helped me to perform and write in different genres but I particularly enjoy Americana, modern country music and instrumental themes/incidental music.  
I play keyboard well enough to provide accompaniment and additional instrumentation to my recordings.  Now retired, I write, record and produce from a home studio.  Songwriting successes include shortlisted lyrics for a Commonwealth Song for HM The Queen in 2022, a song to be presented to Sir Cliff Richard in 2018, several UK Songwriting Contest Finalist Places and appearances on BBC radio in the UK.  I have successful collaborated with several other writers and performers across the UK and US.
