This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient Middle Platonist philosopher and biographer Plutarch's essay On Awareness Of Progress In Virtue

This episode focuses specifically on his discussion of the emotions that a person feels, which they can use as an index for determining whether they are indeed making progress. Plutarch suggests that we ought to look at our past emotional responses and compare them to present emotional responses, and that we ought to do so in two manners, examining them in themselves or in relation to others

Hello one and all, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Surviving the Horror!  

On this month's episode Colin and Josh are back to examine a perhaps misunderstood and underrated horror game of the Xbox 360 era.  In 2008, Konami and Double Helix published Silent Hill: Homecoming.  This game, positioned as the fifth main line Silent Hill title, was the first in the franchise to be developed entirely by a Western studio.  With a troubled development cycle, various conflicting inputs from Konami producers, and a change in the horror landscape at the time with games like Resident Evil 4, would Silent Hill: Homecoming have what it takes to rise to the occasion and satisfy fans?  The answer at the time was a resounding no, with the game garnering mixed critical and user reception.  However, in light of what we know today, and the history of its development, perhaps folks were too hard on Homecoming.  Homecoming tells the story of Alex Shepherd, a solider returning to his home town of Shepherd's Glen after being wounded in battle.  Alex arrives to find the town is in disarray, and most notably his brother and many other children in the town are missing.  As Alex delves deeper into the long held traditions and secrets of Shepherd's Glen he too delves deeper into his own psyche and fragmented self.  The end result is a horrific journey through hellish landscapes, and the dark recesses of the mind.  Is it the best Silent Hill game out there?  Undoubtedly no; but is it as bad as people on the internet would have you believe?  Absolutely not.

As regular readers will likely recall from when it was introduced late in 2024, the Analyzer was in part inspired by Buchs’ own efforts at individual load profit analysis, tracing back to his decades as owner-operator himself. (Gary retired from the road in 2019, yet continues private efforts as a mentor/business coach to other owner-operators.)  

I brought Gary on to talk us through a few divergent load examples in hopes that more owner-operators in the audience might benefit from what is in essence a fairly simple calculator, but might also be a powerful personal accountability tool for business performance long-term.

We'll run through the three cost-input fields you see there, namely: 
**Fixed cost per day under load
**Salary per day under load
and **Variable cost per mile

Then analyze results for three different loads all originating in Dallas with offers at wildly different rates: $2.30, $3, and a whopping $10/mile on a short haul. When it comes to profits, though, results from the analyzer might be surprising if you closely take into consideration the impacts of time spent on each load. Set up with all those different cost metrics, considering your contribution to your home budget's needs in the salary on the expense side of the equation, fundamentally the analyzer is set up to help you do that with a close eye on business profits. 

There are always dozens of variables at play in load selection and post-delivery analysis, but engaging with your own numbers with the tool we hope helps yield better profit results over time, as Gary likes to say, as you "touch those numbers" routinely. Give it a whirl with today's podcast.

Today on American Indian Airwaves (AIA), listeners will hear our special guest discuss the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), its history and January 2024 modifications along with its implications for Native Americans. In addition, our guest will provide an in-depth analysis about the increased aqua or ocean mining by non-renewable extractive industry companies for rare minerals - as part of the Green Economy – potentially jeopardizing, threatening, and/or destroying Native American sacred sites currently under the ocean. Our guest addresses what this situation means for Native American sacred sites off the coastal shorelines of Indigenous people’s traditional territories?  Are there protections in place for these sacred sites? What happens when private companies encounter these sacred sites, and Native American ancestors, sacred items, and forms of cultural patrimony? What roles does NAGPRA play in these situations or does it? 

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990 with the intended purposes to protect and return of Native American ancestors, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. By enacting NAGPRA, Congress recognized that Native American ancestors "must at all times be treated with dignity and respect." Congress also acknowledged that Native American ancestors and other cultural items removed from Federal or tribal lands belong to the lineal descendants, Native American nations, and Native Hawaiian organizations.

•	Shannon O’Loughlin is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and serves the Association on American Indian Affairs as its Chief Executive and Attorney. Shannon has been practicing law for more than 24 years and is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. Shannon serves as Vice Chair of the Board at Native Ways Federation, which educates about informed giving to Native-led nonprofits. 

•	She is a former Chief of Staff to the National Indian Gaming Commission, where she assisted in the development and implementation of national gaming policy, and oversaw the agency’s public affairs, technology, compliance and finance divisions. Shannon was appointed by Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Sally Jewell to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Review Committee in 2013; and was appointed by President Barack Obama as the first Native American to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee within the State Department in 2015.
