The Host of this RoundTable was Bridget Shertzer, Site Director at The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia-Center City. Renfrew provides a safer and healing community in which individuals learn to understand the role the eating disorder has played in their lives, replace their eating disorder behaviors and rituals, and increase flexibility with thoughts to include those that are value-oriented and life-affirming. The college years should be an exciting time for individuals to foster personal growth and expand their horizons. However, all too often, the college environment can become a breeding-ground for a myriad of eating challenges - especially eating disorders. This discussion explored the factors in the college environment that contribute to the onset and/or maintenance of an eating disorder, how to challenge harmful diet culture messaging, and how social media can be both a blessing and a curse when it comes to body image and self-esteem.

Episode 106: Anna Troxell of Mugger on surviving anorexia

I dagens avsnitt har jag med mig Stina och Cornelia – mor och dotter som tillsammans kämpar mot Cornelias ätstörningar. Sjukdomen som har ett grepp om hela familjen. 

Cornelia utvecklade anorexi och bulimi i tidig ålder, och hon delar sin berättelse om hur ätstörningen tog över hennes liv och även påverkade hela familjen. Vi får höra om kampen för att bli frisk, de utmaningar hon möter och hur sjukdomen påverkat hennes vardag.

Stina, Cornelias mamma, ger sin syn på hur det är att stå bredvid och kämpa för sitt barns tillfrisknande. Men mitt i denna resa drabbades Stina själv av cancer. Trots allt som hänt hittar de styrka i varandra och fortsätter framåt, tillsammans.

I wrote "American Dream" as a reflection of the deep struggles I faced struggling with an eating disorder. The song captures the overwhelming pressure to fit into a narrow standard of beauty, a standard that made me constantly question my own worth and how I saw myself. The American Dream represents the distorted version of perfection that I felt I had to chase, even at the cost of my mental and physical well-being. Writing this song was my way of confronting these painful, confusing feelings and expressing the internal battle of trying to reconcile who I was with who I thought I was supposed to be. It's a personal and vulnerable piece, but one I hope resonates with others who are facing similar struggles, showing them they’re not alone. The American Dream, as I saw it, wasn’t just about achieving wealth or fame, but about the dangerous pursuit of perfection, which led me to lose sight of my own worth, and how to love myself. Writing this song was painful, and I needed to be really vulnerable, but was an act of self-expression, an attempt to speak out, and unravel the lies I had been telling myself for years.

Mein Gedicht „Fliegen“ entstand aus meiner Erfahrung mit dem Thema Magersucht. Es erzählt in sanften Bildern den langen Weg zurück in die Normalität.

Es beschreibt die Wahrnehmung des eigenen Selbst, das Abnehmen und das Zunehmen des Gewichtes.

Die Aufnahme wurde im Juni 2022 in der Schreibwerkstatt zum Thema „FrauSein“ unter der Leitung der Erzählerin Johanna Gerosch in Kooperation mit dem Frauenzentrum Weimar e. V. erstellt.

My poem “Flying” was inspired by my personal experience with anorexia. It tells in gentle images the long journey back to normality.

It describes the perception of one's own self, losing weight, and the subsequent gaining of weight.

The recording was created in June 2022 as part of the “FrauSein” (“Being a woman“) writing workshop, led by storyteller Johanna Gerosch, in cooperation with the Weimar Women’s Center.
