In this chapter we talk with the Geologist David Dobson. David is a Professor of Earth Materials at UCL. His research focuses on high-pressure physical property measurements, from sudotakalytes in the Earth's crust to mantle reology and deep earthquakes, as well as the reologys of magma and terrestrial planetary cores. Out of the lab, he enjoys being out in the mountains, unusually migrating north towards the colder climes of Scotland for the winter. GEOLOGICAL MATERIAL

To the people of the North African Spanish enclave of Ceuta, sub-Saharan migrants arrive in Spain in two ways. Occasionally, they appear on Spanish horizons as starving migrants huddled in rickety boats. Though unwelcome, they are fundamentally seen as poor souls that must be saved from the sea and the ego of populist Mediterranean leaders. More commonly, sub-Saharans try to enter Spain by dramatically assaulting Ceuta’s fortified border with Morocco. While the encounter at sea is conducive to hospitality, land entry induces both migrants and Ceutans to think of themselves as warriors locked in a fatal struggle, where victory can only be achieved by escalating violence. As casualties mount on both sides, the far-right party “Vox” has gained significant ground in Ceuta by championing the next level of escalation: arming the police and deploying the army.

A number of Ceutans, however, have grown restless by how their once prosperous trading town is now shunned as an impoverished fortress, famous only for the bloody tragedies occurring at its gates. This paper focuses on the measures that (some) NGOs, journalists and politicians take to challenge the spectacle of land entry: the beating heart of escalation. Specifically, they seek to retell the narrative of land entry to include tropes more associated with the sea. Their coverage focuses on migrants entangled and “drowning” in barbed wire, helplessly wounded and awaiting medical attention, or in a state of silent shock. Alas, these attempts to recast the “aggressive” migrant into a “meek” one are failing, and Ceutans continue to support policies that wreck their town. I argue that such contradictions can be only explained by foregrounding the material reality of both maritime and terrestrial borders.

In 2013, I went to Romania in search of shepherds who would tell me about transhumance, the practice of moving flocks between summer and winter pastures. These journeys used to involve journeys of several weeks and once upon a time, they took place across continental Europe. In Romania, shepherds could be away from home for months at a time, and some of them settled for good in the areas they used for winter pastures. Here Viorel Sas, a 90 year old veteran of transhumance, began talking to me about his own experiences. He was based in western Transylvania. Our conversation was in Romanian. This week Taylor spoke with John Protevi about his recently published book, Regimes of Violence: Toward a Political Anthropology. John is professor of French studies and philosophy at Louisiana State University. He is author of Political Affect; Life, War, Earth; and Edges of the State, all published by the University of Minnesota Press.

Book Summary:

A wide-ranging examination of the roots—and possible future—of violence in human societies

Is aggression inevitable among humans? In Regimes of Violence, John Protevi explores how human violence originates and exists in our societies. Taking humans as biocultural (that is, our social practices shape our bodies and minds), he shows how aggression does not arrive from any purely biological predisposition but rather occurs only in social regimes of violence that, by manipulating the ways in which culture can shape our biological inheritance of rage and aggression, condition the forms of violence able to be expressed at any one time.

Offering detailed insights into human aggression throughout history, Protevi’s analysis ranges from evolutionary psychology to affective ideology and finally to an alternate politics of joy. He examines a wide range of seemingly disparate topics, such as cooperation between early nomadic foragers, organized sports, berserkers and blackout rages, the experiences of maroons escaping slavery, the January 6 invasion of the United States Capitol building, and responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. As he entwines the philosophical with the anthropological, he asks readers to consider why humans’ capacity for cooperation and sharing is so persistently overlooked by stories that focus on aggression and warfare.

Regimes of Violence is an important contribution to studies of Deleuze and Guattari, uniquely combining cutting-edge investigations in psychology, history, evolutionary theory, cultural anthropology, and philosophy to examine the “political philosophy of the mind.” Presenting to readers a refreshingly optimistic perspective, Protevi demonstrates that we are not doomed to war and argues that humans can build a world based on antifascism, joy, and mutual empowerment.

These recordings by anthropologists Panos Panopoulos and Yorgos Samantas offer us a tangible and pleasurable sonic image of highland Naxos, focusing on a range of acoustic stimuli that touches on the multiple aspects of everyday life, as well as those of ritual space and time, and the dynamic interplay between voices, natural sounds and music.

The material compiled sketches an acoustic profile of the land, in a narrative that presents instances that focus both on the intricate terrain of the soundscape, as well as human sonic interventions, and the resonances and interactions of music with the sonic environment.
