We recorded about twelve hours after plainclothes federal officers abducted a Tufts University graduate student off the street in Somerville, MA. The student's apparent "transgression"? Writing an op-ed in Tufts' student newspaper advocating for Tufts to divest from Israel.

To understand how we've reached this moment, we start to unpack how President Trump is wielding both anti-Black racism and antisemitism to crush American democracy. The truth is, Trump is a terrific story teller. The story he's telling now to justify an open assault on our universities and our students marshals race as a political weapon. Trump is cementing a predictably fascist "us v. them" narrative that defines whiteness by Black inferiority and locates Jews as a scapegoat for his most vicious attacks on civil rights and democratic norms.

Betar, the far-right youth movement of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, is happy to help US President Donald J. Trump curtail pro-Palestinian speech and academic freedoms. 
That has mainstream American Jews fear that the Trump administration’s crackdown on democratic freedoms of speech, assembly, and academia will fuel anti-Semitism rather than enhance their security.


Netanyahu’s allies turn Jews into potential scapegoats

Last week, Harvard University started fighting back against Trump's assault on higher ed. In this episode of #RaceClass, Jon and Arnie discuss why immediate praise for Harvard is premature. To deserve our praise, Harvard needs to do more than defend itself. It needs to leverage its near $60 billion endowment to defend all universities against unlawful federal interference. Harvard need not do it alone. Following the lead of thousands of university professors across the country, Harvard should create a mutual defense pact that unites all of our campuses to protect our fundamental right to free and open inquiry free from intimidation, harassment or discipline. Harvard also needs to practice what it preaches and cultivate free and open inquiry on its campus. A start would include revising its anti-harassment policies by rejecting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and clarifying that speech criticizing Israel, Zionism or antizionism is legitimate discourse that does not itself constitute antisemitism.

19 years ago Rabbi Sacks delivered this Yom HaZikaron-Yom Ha'atzmaut address. He spoke, as was his annual tradition as Chief Rabbi, at the Bnei Akiva ceremony in May 2006, at Finchley Synagogue (Kinloss). These words, 19 years later, could almost have been freshly written for today. His message is timeless, and timely.

Some people see the frontline for antisemitism as the antisemitism on the left. This is especially true post 10/7. Others feel that the threat from the right is what the Jewish people need to worry about. Indeed, the Jewish Voter Resource Center released the results of a survey just a few days ago which found that nearly half of Jewish voters said right-wing individuals and groups were a bigger threat in terms of antisemitism, while 34% viewed left-wing groups as a bigger problem. Clearly a big divide. A few weeks ago, ADL New York/New Jersey held a webinar which focused on just this issue by hosting a webinar entitled, “Is Antisemitism Worse on the Right or the Left?” The host for this podcast, Scott Richman, interviewed Oren Segal about his thoughts on this issue. Oren is the Senior Vice President for Counter Extremism and Intelligence. It was a rich and engaging conversation, and it is now being released as a podcast.

Joining Cuomo in this propaganda offensive, not surprisingly, is the pro-Israel doxxing operation Canary Mission. In the current fraught atmosphere, this is a serious matter; Mamdani has received death threats and his campaign is boosting security measures. In Episode 283 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg examines the accusations against Mamdani that have been hyped by the New York Post and even the supposedly more objective Politico, and weighs them against Mamdani's own responses.
