In this episode, I throw some shade at some of the latest antics from the anti-Israel movement including their attempts to mess with the Democratic National Convention, and at some in the pro-Israel community who have jumped all over a single line in President Biden's convention speech and unfairly written off Democrats as having given in to the antisemitic wing of the horseshoe left. 

The Democratic Convention is a reminder that for the vast majority of Democrats, it’s perfectly possible to both care deeply about Israel’s security and recognize the humanity of Palestinian Arabs and want a better life for them - most of us really don’t have that hard a time wanting both those things at the same time and they shouldn’t be seen as contradictory.

Once-time peacenik icon Tulsi Gabbard has joined Robert F. Kennedy Jr in defecting to the now openly fascist and even Nazi-embracing MAGA camp—actually becomng members of the Trump transition team. Meanwhile, the Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, likewise enamoured of Vladimir Putin and the dictators in his orbit (including mass murderer Bashar Assad), is being represented by a former Trump attorney in her bid to get on the ballot in swing state Nevada. Beyond the threat that she could serve as a spoiler and throw the election to Trump, this raises questions about the cooptation of segments of the American left by MAGA-fascism. It is no longer just the old-school sectarian "tankie" left that's in danger of taking the fascist lure in a Red-Brown alliance, but the pacifist, cannabis-friendly "green" left as well. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism and hate.

Since 10/7, Jewish students have been the victims of a steep rise in antisemitic incidents in their schools and universities. In some cases, Jewish students are left feeling angry, unwelcome and at times unsafe. However, Jewish day schools appear to be a safe harbor in this environment - free from the antisemitism that students face elsewhere.

ADL New York/New Jersey’s Campus Committee decided to do a deep dive into this topic to understand not only what Jewish students in day schools were experiencing but also how well those schools were preparing their students and graduates to face a less welcoming world. So, they hosted a webinar a few weeks ago with four day school heads in the New York/New Jersey region.

Scott Richman, the host of this podcast, was honored to serve as the moderator of this important discussion. It was a rich and fascinating look at how one part of the Jewish community is handling the issue of antisemitism. It was so interesting that this edited version is now being releases as a “From the Frontlines” podcast.

The anniversary of October 7th was a difficult day for all people of good will who mourned the horrific loss of innocent life, the brutalization of many more who were injured and the inhuman taking of hostages. Today’s show reflects on that trauma but also the antisemitism that ensued, the soul searching by the Jewish community in the US over the past year, the surge in Jewish identity building, and the many questions with which we are left one year later. 

The guides for this journey are Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, Senior Rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, and ADL CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt. The idea for this conversation grew out of Rabbi Cosgrove’s insightful new book on the post 10/7 reality, entitled, “For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today.” Truly a special show and an extraordinary lineup to help us understand this difficult moment in which we find ourselves. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant this week. This is the first time the court has ever targeted leaders from a democratic country. PM Netanyahu responded saying: "The antisemitic decision of the international court in The Hague is a modern Dreyfus trial, and it will end the same way. It is falsely accusing me, the democratically elected prime minister of the State of Israel and Israel’s former defense minister Yoav Gallant, of deliberately targeting civilians, this when we do everything in our power to avoid civilian casualties." Netanyahu and Gallant might have to avoid visiting certain countries in Europe and Canada as a result of the decision. It is believed that once President Trump is in office, he will target the ICC for their unjust and illegitimate ruling.
