With a handful of own labels, as one half of Subwax Distribution and as an artist himself, Barcelona-based Baldo Gallego or short Baldo has been shaping and influencing as well as contributing and giving his all to the electronic music scene for more than a decade. Shortly Baldo released music on Gerd Janson’s label Running Back and on STEP Recordings, after a hiatus of more than year due to the pandemic. Now the passionate artist is back, refreshed and inspired to hit the scene with more music be it due the (at least partly) opened clubs or other circumstances like Baldo’s not so cheesy but sweet morning addictions. However, overtime working Baldo found the time to speak with Torture the Artist about his jobs, that do not feel like work, his artistically directions, his latest releases and where we can find him socializing secludedly from the clubs. Additionally, Baldo mixed and compiled the latest and last art:cast of a fulminant year including music freshly and soon to be released music.

With several involvements in various fields, i.g. as a booker, DJ, co-label head, Hard Wax employee or journalist, Finn has gained multiple experiences allowing him to gain and develop diverse perspectives and views on the scene, the business and beyond. As one part of the booker-team of Paloma, a Berlin institution for underground music and cultural affairs, and as the booker of Monarch Johannsen has gone through the ups and downs the pandemic has caused over the past two years – even when there have been probably more downsides rather than the opposite. However, the artist has not lost hope and speaks about the past, present and future of club(culture) and how he has overcome yet perceived the development of the scene and its players. Additionally, the Macro co-label head – the label that Johannsen runs with Stefan Goldmann, speaks about how he has remained passionate about music all those years, how he’s kept a sane mind over the pandemic and delivers the longest art:cast in history – or a travel through his records. If you expect a club-based set, then Johannsen has to disappoint you as he musically mostly refers to the golden era of HipHop, the 90s.

Having come a long way Johannes Albert found his music platform Frank Music a little bit more than ten years ago. He calls it platform because it has proven to be more than a label but rather a space for him to artistically express his current musical state of mind and to release music from befriended or artists he has come across. However, ten years is quite a long time in the fast-paced electronic music scene, if not to say in the world. But Johannes has always managed to keep the label’s vibe burning also due to the fact that he has always managed to keep his own fire for music burning and produce the next record or track. Maybe therefore his contribution to the label’s anniversary package, which was out in December, called Dynamite was a perfect fit, nominally and musically. Still the pandemic has forced Johannes to undergo some changes. At an artist-level Covid has influenced his production-output negatively as he needs the dance floor for inspiration but surprisingly the pandemic made 2020 the most successful one in the label’s history. In the light of the label’s 10th anniversary Torture the Artist spoke to Johannes about Frank Music, his partner-in-crime Iron Curtis, the influence of the pandemic on him and other related topic. Additionally Johannes compiled the latest edition of the art:cast series, called the b-sides.

Nicolas Duque is a relative newcomer to the scene with only a couple of releases under his belt. However, he managed to develop a recognizable and distinct sound influenced by hazy 90s House Music and UK Garage that is deep and quirky at the same time. So far the Colombian-based artist released music on renowned British labels like Lobster Theremin, Dansu Discs or Nuances de Nuit as well as a release on Magic Carpet and has some new stuff already lined up for this year. Shortly after returning from the a short trip to the sea the artist sat down with Torture the Artist reflecting on his production process his EDM and Tech House past and pondered about possible pandemic influences on the scene as well as him as an artist. Ultimately Nicolas has mixed and compiled the latest art:cast, which pretty much sums up the artist’s current musical being.

Currently melting in the French heat it's Exarde and Sakskøbing label head Ottuga providing us with the next episode of the art:cast series. The ever digging artist has compiled 66 minutes of bliss or to pick up  on Ottuga's bio he's been browsing through his collection, which to most parts consist of 80s and 90s music. #132 is musically moving in-between Deep, Tech- and Minimal, sometimes with a more housey note and sometimes with a slightly rougher tone but always melodic and always on point and certainly making one melt away a little bit faster.

Parisian producers – Jacques Bon and Vincent Drux – take a seat with TTA to discuss their specializations inside a shared space and within their debut album, A Long Way. For thirteen years, Jacques Bon managed (the now retired) Paris branch of Smallville Records. Otherwise, Jaques Bon has earned an impressive reputation, releasing on other notable record labels such as Giegling, Live at Robert Johnson, and Mule Musiq. Vincent Drux is a “behind-the-scenes type”; who uproots his technical background as a sound engineer to hone his sonic pallet. While majoring in sound design, Drux recently started his own label, Cabale Records… stay tuned as they launch past the infancy stages. Although this is their first album together, the two are long-acquainted, their first joint track being Fading Sail – released on Lawrence’s Dial Records – in 2020. The duo's like-minded friendship revels in a balanced dynamic of musical intersections. Ideal for those in-between hours, A Long Way (released 7/1/22) is eight tracks, featuring futuresque blends of warm color atop some cooler minimal shades. Despite the standing point, Jacques Bon and Drux’s recent collaboration has requited a positively bittersweet confection.

NYC-based producer, DJ and label-head Farren Laen delivers the next installment of the art:cast series or a conglomeration of (own) productions paired with pieces that complement and enhance the set's tone and vibe. Hitting the dark dance spot the New Yorker builds up his set like typical old red brick buildings in the city: stone after stone resulting in a memory lane of the future. Just like in his own music Farren Laen comes up with a vibe that is short of becoming possessive luring one into its atmospheric vortex as the space-out sequences almost have a meditative touch, while latter is left behind shortly before dancers/ listeners drift away in their very own thought bubbles and Farren presses the "House kick-drum" to continue his cat-and-mouse game, a game he seemingly not only plays well but has perfected. Otherwise it's hard to explain how someone can come up with such a beauty of sound-waves within only 67 minutes.

Irishman in Glasgow Peter Lawlor, better known under his artist name Polytunnel, just had his trend-setting single Outer Earth out on Made Magnetic, which came with remixes from artists like Denham Audio, Lighght and Jellypelt, and is not only a musical follow-up of previous releases but foremost the consolidation of the artist's status of "one to watch in the present and future." A status that was caused by previous releases on Seven Sign Recordings and Childsplay in 2022 respectively in 2019. Now Peter delivers the latest episode of the art:cast series and, of course, does not disappoint as he created a conglomerate of tracks that smoothly intertwine and keep the tension growing.

Originally from Manchester but having found his place in Berlin, it's SY who delivers the next episode of the art:cast series with an approach, which lets the listener dive into the artist's ocean of music with latter coming in (huge) waves and causing the same. It may or may  not be a surprise for listeners, who have been following the artist for a moment, that SY chose a rather deep, housey and 90s infused selection of tracks, for his art:cast. However, Simon, SY's real name, wiped the dust of techy dead wood off almost two years ago to musically reinvent himself and have both, his sets as well as productions, circle around House Music, where SY not only found ease but fulfillment. You do not necessarily associate the Mexican electronic music scene with the deeper nuances and facets but rather with Dark Disco and Melodic Techno. All the more Glo My’s way to walk the initially-named path is even more impressive. Originally from Mexico City Jimena, Glo My’s real name, now resides in Italy’s north, Milan to be more precise, spreading her ever groovey yet melodically demanding and sound-wise ambitious music to and with the world. Therefore the artist provides her listeners with a potpourri of Deep House, Breaks, UK Garage and keeps a ravey and with abstract textures sprinkled vibe, which elegantly and smoothly unites the before-mentioned genres and influences to one homogenous sound-experience adding up to the Glo My-way. Her own events, Hell Town, surely have helped Glo My to dive deeper into compiling her sets and creating unique tonal ecstasies but these days the artist distinguishes herself with several productions, something Glo My has only been doing for a little longer than four years. Her latest addings to her catalogue of musical outings are her track Sang Woo on Lis Sarroca’s Maai label, as well as an EP on Womxn Records called Lejos de Casa and another single track, Hey Kiss Me, on Bass Water Freak Out. Having been kissed by Glo My’s style, probably as softly as it was once sung about, there’s only one thing left to say: It’s either the Glo My Way or no way at all. You can convince yourself as the Milanese by choice compiled the latest edition of the art:cast series and talks her latest outing on Maai with us alongside some spicy information of how she became involved with electronic music, her home-county’s influence on her and much more.

Mixing uplifting, disco-esque, 90s and trance-influenced tracks from her conglomerate Marie compiled and mixed a journey through the sub-genres of House maintaining a powerful and not easing synthesis of the art, pushing the listeners through the full hour of the podcast. The energetic DJ does not seem to slow down in any way, may it be production-wise, Marie just released a full EP under her (more) Trance-moniker DJ Super Jackpot on Community Center and a track on Lis Sarroca's MAAI label as MLF, or as a DJ. With so much energy and talent the French artist is surely one to look out for in the future providing (her) music a groovey yet melodic touch giving it an irresistible twist you do not want to miss. With several releases under his belt Manchester-based artist Aiden Francis definitely has left the status of one to look out for and turned it to one to follow when searching for inspiring genre-spanning music to play out. His outings on Magic Carpet, Gestalt Records, Houseum Records and, his latest, on Holly Lester’s Duality Trax certainly have paved Aiden the way for a bright future in the electronic music scene. His less is more approach as well as his “elusive character“ and - let’s say it - the changing hair-colors conduced to Aiden’s success. But maybe it’s his recklessness of not taking himself too seriously that makes the originally from Yorkshire-coming artist an appealing character in the scene and this, in combination with his music, is golden and definitely continues the golden era of emerging artists from northern England. In his interview with Torture the Artist Aiden speaks about his pre-artist times, the status quo, his obsession with digging music as well as studio works and releases. Alongside the interview he delivers a club-oriented mix to ring in the weekend.

Living in Madrid but originally from Poland it’s Voitek Taranczuk better known under his artist moniker Ketiov, which is Voitek backwards, and as part of Polish duo Catz ‘n Dogz (formerly known as 3 Channels). After just releasing the seventh outing on his own label and the altogether second one of himself on it, Ketiov now delivers the number 144 of Torture the Artist’s art:cast series and it is a ride into House. With influences from Chicago House and generally a preference for darker sounds with sexy sweaty note, Ketiov compiled a homogenous conglomerate of music that showcases the artist’s knowledge as well as experience in the 67 minute lasting mix. If you ever needed a soundtrack to imagine what it feels like to dance in a combined heat and power station, Ketiov has it for you.

With a good few releases under his belt on labels such as Gene On Earth’s The Sound Of Limo, Gestalt Records, The Sound Of Steam or Craigie Knowes Bristol-based artist Boulderhead has built quite a formidable discography since 2020 and if pressing plants weren’t as busy as they are, the Welsh would have even more music of himself out there. Aside from releasing own music Henry James, Boulderhead’s real name, runs his own label Mint Tea, on which he’s been putting out VAs only so far, also including music from himself under his real name. However, since the label is a passion project according to Henry it does not follow a regular releasing schedule but now seems to be back with an EP and maybe more. In an interview with Torture the Artist Boulderhead speaks about the success of his latest release, the future of the label, how he likes his tea served and more. Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
