When it comes to realising the visual concept of a film, the Production Designer is key. They use a unique set of skills to develop the design style for the sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting and costumes. In this podcast, WFT Member and Production Designer and Graphic Artist Jill Beecher talks with Production Designer Katie Byron about their craft and all things industry related... from flotation tanks to film families.

Katie Byron: Don’t Worry Darling is the second collaboration between Olivia Wilde and Katie Byron after Booksmart in 2018. Her work includes Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon, Janicza Bravo’s  Zola, Tara Miele’s Wander Darkly , Spectrevision’s Color Out Of Space an HP Lovecraft adaptation by cult director Richard Stanley, meta slasher film The Final Girls and several films by Drake Doremus; Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Like Crazy, Zoe, Breathe In, Equals and Newness. Her television work includes BBC America’s Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency, IFC’s Documentary Now, the FX series A Teacher and the Australian/American genre bending series Wolf Like Me.

Jill Beecher: Jill was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1984. She is a production designer, art director and concept illustrator who has worked across Hollywood Productions and local Irish projects too. Jill is now represented by William Morris Endeavour and is a member of the British and American Art Director Guilds. She also is a visual artist who has exhibited in Europe, America and Australia.

What does an art department coordinator do? Our guest Sasha De Mello breaks down everything that goes into supporting the artists who design and execute the visual aesthetic of a film. Her tasks are similar to a production coordinator’s, she says — except instead of pushing around black and white documents all day, she gets to deal with the most stunning and immersive imagery. She deals with sets, costumes, props, hair and makeup, concept artists, graphic designers, and more, allocating labor, managing cost reporting, interfacing with production, establishing the pipeline with studios, and facilitating communication with VFX vendors. From development to post, the art department coordinator works directly with the production designer and art director in keeping the visual language of a film consistent and on brand. We end our conversation with Sasha’s insights on how to lead groups of artists through effective creative collaboration.

REZAK is a DJ/Producer with a natural talent for beats and rhythm, and with 12 years experience of producing, song matching of House Music. REZAK quickly became a household name among underground dj/producers in his home town Tehran, Iran however since there was a lot of restriction and government rules back home, he decided to continue his music journey in another country so he moved to Cyprus and started playing in clubs among with known electronic house music djs/producers such as Betoko, James Zabiela, Mark Knight, Amine Edge & Dance. a few years ago REZAK moved to Seattle, Washington, and he released his first production ‘’Crazies’’. Fast forward today he has multiple tracks available on every download and streaming platform with verified international labels. G House, Tehroom Records. he brings a new kind of variety to the scene of music by excelling in multiple genres  including house, tech house, and techno as well as downtempo. His passion for the music is clear, and the love he has for his fans is  unparalleled.

The beginnings of Circoloco at DC10 back in Ibiza 1999 could hardly be more humble. At a virtually unknown location, the iconic Monday morning session started a clubbing revolution that make an enduring impact on the shape of modern club culture. Since then, the ubiquitous Crazy Clown face has travelled around the world as a beacon of the party ethos of Circo Loco, becoming a symbol for the underground spirit of dance music culture and the most copied clubbing imagery ever. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Barely spending any time under the radar, Circoloco at DC10 was already the hype party by 2001 and the international press was soon declaring it the essential must-do of any Ibiza visit. A no-nonsense, back to the old skool vibe of how dance music should be, with Italian promoters Andrea and Antonio using word of mouth and solid principles of free or cheap entry alongside an unrivalled forward thinking music policy, it changed the story of what clubbing could, and should, be all about.

It was unprecedented in Ibiza or anywhere else since the days of the Paradise Garage or the Summer of Love in the UK. People were quite literally going crazy at the Circoloco events, there was fancy dress and people sitting down in clubs and a deafening roar every time the bass dropped or a plane went past and everyone, but everyone, shared a deep love for the music. These are the factors that have always set Circoloco apart as a guiding light for electronic music

Such is the power of Circoloco that DJs of all genres of dance music would play for free or, better still, offer to play and be refused. The sound of Circoloco has slowly evolved and developed through paths of association with tribal and minimal, but has always held the truest values of house music at its core. The careers of Circoloco resident DJ’s are indelibly intertwined with the buzz around their Monday afternoon sessions at DC10. Now, the New Era rips up the rulebook once again and sees a new generation of future heroes attempt to stamp their claim as the next Circoloco legend.

Circoloco is amongst the most sought after party brands in the world and has multiple residencies around the world at the foremost temples of dance music as well as at leading festivals and conferences on all continents. It’s Monday sessions at DC10, despite well documented problems over the years, continue to go from strength to strength and is rightly regarded as a true Mecca of clubbing in the world today.

Music was my first love.. and it will be my last!
Schon früh fand der Wiesbadener Gefallen daran, in der alten Plattensammlung seines Vaters zu stöbern und persönliche Schätze für sich zu entdecken. Aufgewachsen mit Tonträgern von Motown Rec., Michael Jackson und diversen Disco – Samplern aus den 70s/80s, prägte sich schon früh sein persönlicher Musikgeschmack, der sich bis heute in seinen Sets wiederspiegelt. Denn eins war für Ihn schon immer klar – es muss ordentlich grooven.

Spielte er in den Anfangstagen noch R `n` B und Soul, so hat sich über die Jahre sein ganz persönlicher Stil aus Nu Disco, Deep und Disco House entwickelt, der sich klanglich am besten irgendwo zwischen dem legendären Studio 54 und Miami Vice beschreiben lässt.

Garniert mit frischen Remixen bekannter Dance Classics bietet er seinem Publikum somit einen warmen und groovigen Retro Sound, welcher mit packenden Synthie-Melodien und mitreißenden Vocals kein Tanzbein ruhig stehen lässt.

Anëk's Upcoming Gigs


Best friends since childhood, Anëk originate from Copenhagen, Denmark and are the first female duo to be welcomed to the exclusive VIVa MUSiC roster. With over 10 years of experience DJ’ing and producing , Karina & Denise, who now reside in the UK and France are far from unexperienced in the house music scene. From a young age the two friends found their passion and calling in electronic music, and from 2001 have wasted no time pursuing a career doing what they love most.

The first release from Anëk, "Time Is Now" came out on vinyl on the Ibiza based label Chronovision and was followed up by "This World," featuring vocals from house legend Robert Owens as well remixes by DJ W!ld, Lee Brinx and Veitengruber. 

Early 2013 they released "Nothing To Lose" on Material, with a great remix from Darius Syrossian

VIVa MUSiC saw their standout track "Girltalk" as part of the labels 100th EP. The VIVa100 EP embraced all key VIVa MUSiC artists, including Steve LAWLER, Darius Syrossian, LEON, Livio & Roby, Julian Perez and more providing forward thinking productions for a very special release.

2013 has been a great year for the DJ/Producer duo. Being residents at the VIVa Warriors weekly parties at Sankeys Ibiza and travelling around the world with the Warrior brand and doing independent shows. 
Their production “Come Out To Play” became the anthem of VIVa Warriors 2012 / 2013 after it was exclusively played all summer in 2012 long by Steve LAWLER. Anëk did an updated version in 2013 with remixes from Santé and Philip Bader. The release has been played and supported all summer 2013 by the likes of Marco Carola, Davide Squillace, Matthias Tanzmann and many others

Also this summer their production "HMS" was played several times by Richie Hawtin at Enter Space Ibiza 

In the past year Anëk have made a very positive impression indeed, displaying their ear for producing solid dance floor cuts as well as playing alongside artists such as Steve LAWLER, Tiefschwarz, Guti, Livio & Roby, Darius Syrossian, Santé, Detlef, Philip Bader, LEON and many others at various VIVa Warriors parties, VIVa MUSiC showcases and other events worldwide.

They are currently working in the studio on new tracks and remixes, with many things to follow this year and next. They have recently set up their own label Kena Records, so make sure to watch this space
