Art, just like other social kinds, is often defined in terms of its function, as
people create objects in order to satisfy certain needs. The function of art can
be defined in different ways but is usually expected to provide a rewarding
aesthetic experience.
The requirement for intentionality is so common in the literature that almost all
definitions of art require an artwork to be the product of an intentional action.
definitions of this sort aim to describe not how art is actually thought of, but
how it should be thought of. If we look and see what it is that we call art, we will
also find no common properties, only similarities. Knowing what art is has
nothing to do with being able to define it
