Cosmic Collisions, Space Darkness, and Facts About the Universe

This UVA Speaks podcast features Kelsey Johnson, Professor of Astronomy and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia. Earlier this year, Johnson captivated audiences at a popular Lifetime Learning virtual event entitled "Mysteries of the Cosmos: Science, Philosophy, and the Big Questions," where she delved into some of life's most profound mysteries. Due to the large number of questions posed by participants, Johnson agreed to address additional inquiries in this podcast. Here, she tackles deep questions about the origins of the universe, the nature of time, and the possibility of other dimensions. Johnson underscores the importance of curiosity and humility when confronting such vast and potentially unanswerable questions, and she champions interdisciplinary thinking as essential for fostering innovation and breakthroughs.

Kelsey Johnson is a professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia, an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Religious Studies, and she currently serves as the associate dean of undergraduate education at the College of Arts & Sciences. She is the past president of the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the founding director of the award-winning Dark Skies Bright Kids program. Johnson has won numerous awards for her research, teaching, and promotion of science literacy. Her TED talk on the importance of dark skies has more than 2 million views, and her writing has appeared in nationwide publications, including the New York Times, Scientific American, and the Washington Post.

Out there in the Universe, each star represents an opportunity: a chance for a stellar system to develop that just might possess something remarkable. While we normally think about life, and intelligent life at that, as the grand prize the Universe has to offer, there are a wide variety of fascinating phenomena that are out there to consider. Whereas Mercury, for example, is the closest world to our Sun in our own Solar System, it still takes 88 days to make a complete revolution. In other systems, however, exoplanets can be so hot that they orbit their parent star in less than a single Earth day.

In fact, we've discovered a few systems that are so extreme, the planets that orbit them are in the process of disintegrating: where the heat, winds, and radiation from the parent star actually blows part of the planet itself away. This doesn't just include a planet's atmosphere, which is what we see for giant worlds, but even the surfaces and interiors of rocky planets in the most extreme cases. At temperatures of around 2000 degrees and upwards, these exoplanets can lose their crusts, mantles, and even their cores over long enough timescales.

Believe it or not, we've actually caught a few exoplanets doing exactly this, and we've got the JWST spectra in hand for one of them now, teaching us, for the first time, what a planetary interior is made of outside of our own Solar System. I'm so pleased to have the first author from that 2025 study, soon-to-be Dr. Nick Tusay, as our guest on this edition of the Starts With A Bang podcast, as we take a look at the most extreme exoplanetary systems ever discovered!

Spring is the time of year when the Big Dipper climbs higher into the northern sky, but the Big Dipper is not itself a constellation. It’s only part of a much larger group called Ursa Major, the Great Bear. It also makes for a great guidepost to other stars and constellations!

4/7/25 - The Big & Little Dippers

The Superstition Mountains… This volcanic and mystical mountain range in Arizona has always been a really captivating place for me. Ever since I was a kid I’ve always had an attraction to the desert landscape, flora, fauna, people, etc. Fast forward a little over 30 years and not too long ago, I just found out my great grandfather was of Apache Native American from Mexico – talk about bringing things full circle. Perhaps this explains my deep fascination with the American desert? My immediate or extended family was never one to talk too deeply about their roots or history – just not the type to do so. I have been enjoying having talks to my grandmother about this part of my culture. And as I’ve now figured out, so many lost stories are held in the stories of our grandparents. “UNiTi” was inspired by this 🌵🛸

I have a great distaste for not making music.

Here you’ll find all of the songs I have written , my improvisations, as well as a good few weird experiments. I aim to keep changing my music, hopefully never getting stuck in a musical rut or staying in the same genre too long. When I started it was all one guitar stuff (no overdubs), and very bad sound production (i.e, no sound production!), but since then I’ve started adding more instruments such as drums bass and saz and I’m slowly but surely getting better at sound production. And last but not least, I am slowly but surely getting into singing. I welcome all feedback whether good or bad. Or indifferent. I also want to hear from those who are apathetic about my music! I recorded three albums:
