Retorno al Nido (Retorn al Niu) es un documental sonoro realizado durante la primavera de 2022 con grabaciones de paisajes y cantos de aves en la región de la Vall d'Albaida (Aielo de Malferit, L'Olleria). La pieza combina la presencia de los cantos de los pájaros con las oralidades de vecinos de la zona en relación a su lucha por la preservación del paraje natural. Conceptos como el ritmo, la melodía, la armonía, la textura y el silencio se entremezclan para valorar hasta qué punto la actividad del ser humano (la antropofonía u otras fuentes vibracionales no audibles) afecta a los entornos naturales. Retorno al nido reflexiona sobre el actual conflicto de la instalación masiva de macro-plantas fotovoltaicas en la Comunidad Valenciana, que en estos momentos está gestionando más de 300 proyectos en zonas rurales. SEO/BirdLife defiende desde 1993 unas `Renovables responsables´ concebidas para provocar el máximo beneficio a las comunidades locales y el mínimo impacto ambiental. 

La pieza homenajea además el paciente y apasionado oficio de la ornitología y la grabación de campo, especialmente con la compañía de Eloïsa Matheu, muy probablemente la primera mujer biólóga en comenzar a grabar paisajes sonoros en España. Suele ocurrir que escuchamos los cantos de las aves pero no alcanzamos a verlas o distinguirlas, es en sí la escucha acusmática de cada día. Una invitación para detenerse en la escucha y volver al nido ancestral: “El susurro de cada hoja y de cada criatura nos implora que cuidemos el mundo vivo que nos rodea; un mundo que, de hecho, puede que contenga secretos de amor por todo lo que existe, en particular por nuestra humanidad. Esta música divina se está atenuando a un ritmo acelerado. Se acerca la hora en la que tendremos que declarar como testigos cuando los espíritus de las criaturas vuelvan para la cacería final” (Bernard Krause).

Esta pieza sonora está en castellano, mi lengua materna, pero también hay testimonios orales en valenciano y en catalán (también lenguas maternas ya que nací en Valencia). La pieza trata de cuidar la riqueza de la variedad lingüística de la península ibérica, donde una misma palabra puede mutar mucho entre pueblos y regiones, aunque estos territorios estén muy próximos entre sí. Esta confluencia entre fronteras y lenguajes, tanto entre humanos como entre otros seres vivos - en este caso hablamos de aves- es una constante en mi exploración con el trabajo sonoro. Ever wondered what a seed truly is? These tiny living entities contain the blueprint of life, giving us the food, fibers, fuel, and materials we rely on. Seeds can enter dormancy, a natural pause that allows them to survive tough conditions. This ability is key to gene banks, like the one at Agroscope in Switzerland, where seeds are preserved to protect our agricultural diversity. But while gene banks safeguard countless seeds, the diversity we see in our fields and on our plates has drastically shrunk. Today, just a handful of crops dominate, controlled by a few big corporations. So, where did all that diversity go? And why don't we think about the story behind seeds when – let’s say – we throw an apple core?

(1/3) the potential of a seed

We're in the heart of Hungary's Great Plains with József Hegyesi, surrounded by an orchard brimming with 65 varieties of fruit trees – apples, plums, cherries, and more. His farm, like an island of diversity amidst a sea of monocultures, is a testament to his passion as a farmer and seed keeper. József not only preserves seeds in his on-farm seed bank but also shares them, along with the knowledge and culture they represent. He walks us through the meticulous process of harvesting seeds, emphasizing the patience and risk required to let fruits fully mature. Here, things go “full cycle”. But who truly owns these seeds? And how do farmers like József ensure diverse seeds continue to circulate freely? In part two of "Seeds as Time Capsules," we explore the seed diversity movement and the networks of activists, farmers, and gardeners working together to protect this vital resource.

(2/3) a garden full of diversity

A stomach is a carrier bag technology. Just as humans, non-humans plucked berries from shrubs, and picked up the best apples from the ground. The domestication of wild species is a complex and intertwined path to … ? Well, what is actually ‘wild’ in contrast to ‘domesticated’? In part three of “Seeds As Time Capsules” we return to the gene bank to explore how crop diversity came about and learn more about the intricate process of seed conservation and the resources it demands. Preserving an Eden-esk garden full of diversity in fortresses such as the doomsday vault in Svalbard can’t be the only way to go. We need diversity everywhere. By exploring new genomic editing technologies and the challenges the climate crisis poses to agriculture through the perspectives of a gene bank operator and a seed diversity activist, we emphasize the critical importance of protecting cultivated seed diversity and ensuring access for all. This underscores the urgent need for civil society's active involvement in safeguarding our agricultural future.

(3/3) seed keeping is a political act

🏆 Winning entry in the 2023 Wildlife Sound Recording Society 2023 Richard Margoschis Documentary Competition.

“2023 was a big year of change for our family. We moved countries leaving behind the nest we’d built over 10 years. This piece was a way of processing our fleeting memories. Together with my two eldest daughters, we listen to and chat about the recordings I’d made of the swallows that visited our barn. We found parallels between them and us.

A huge thanks from myself and daughters to the WSRS for this award. Owls are a family favourite - don’t tell the swallows!”

Soil Re-imagined

With a particular focus on the meaning behind audiovisual art and contemporary sound art, this documentary explores ideas of creativity, imagination, and music. It provides an immersive experience of how sound can merge with the world of images and new technology.

The objectives are to educate on the history of connecting sound with visual images and to present a rarely discussed theme. Featuring insights from Megan Hyde, curator and artist, and Cornelia Lund, Film and Media researcher, this audio documentary will dive into the fascinating world of visualising sounds.

Visualizing Sound - Inside Sound Art And Audiovisula Art - Audio Documentary

Love Can Move Mountains is the tale of how a 22-year-old woman in 1988 Dublin broke off an engagement and found love behind the Iron Curtain.

Whether it’s the trials and tribulations of navigating a new romance beyond the summer, falling in love after falling out of love, organising a wedding between two countries on opposite sides of the continent, or integrating into each other’s lives – Love Can Move Mountains details the experience of a young Irish woman and what manifested from the serendipitous meet-cute with a young Bulgarian man during the downfall of the Iron Curtain era in Eastern Europe.

Allow yourself to be taken on a journey to the late 1980s as my mother tells all in this tale of how she met my father – all thanks to her and a friend going on a package holiday to Bulgaria by chance instead of Cyprus and a dash of love moving a mountain or two.

An interview recorded over one winter afternoon, my mother brought me down her very own memory lane.
