This is a poem by the brother of Charles Thatcher,  Richmond or "Dick" Thatcher ( 1842 – 1891 ) about the short-lived gold rush at Kiandra (1859 - 1861) in the snowy mountains region of New South Wales.  It was mainly alluvial gold, and though a lot was found initially, it ran out quickly, and diggers moved on. No doubt the weather also had a lot to do with it.

Author Talk for the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival (Victoria).  Acclaimed historian, biographer and speaker Ross McMullin presents his most recent publication Life So Full of Promise. This is his second multi-biography about Australia’s lost generation of World War I, and it features another collection of inter-woven stories set in that defining era.

Ross has again combined extensive research and narrative flair in this sequel to Farewell, Dear People, the winner of multiple awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian Histor

Ross will be at the Tatura Library on Tuesday May 7th from 6:30pm.  The Numurkah Library on Tuesday May 7th from 2pm and the Avenel Library on Wednesday the 8th of May from 2pm.

Author & Historian Ross McMullin ahead of talks at GV Libraries & his book 'Life So Full of Promise'

What was it like to live and work through a dark time in the Sunshine State?



From 1968 to 1987, Queensland stagnated under the infamous rule of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen. For 19 years, the "Hillbilly Dictator" oversaw rampant corruption, cultural torpor, environmental destruction and the closest Australia has come to a police state. I, Aidan Elwig Pollock, have interviewed two people who lived under the regime, to find out what life was like under the shadow of Sir Joh. Natasha Pollock grew up knowing no other government, whilst Norman Pollock worked as a  council engineer in Labor controlled Caboolture Shire. They discuss stagnation, bureaucracy and elation in the Sunshine State's dark years. 



Biographical information: My name is Aidan Elwig Pollock. I am a history and media/communications student at the University of Sydney, and an editor of Honi Soit. I grew up in Sydney, but my mother and grandfather - Natasha Pollock and Norman Pollock - grew up and worked in Queensland. For as long as I can remember I've heard stories about how awful Joh Bjelke-Petersen was. This project represents an attempt to learn more details about how they lived, worked, and felt about Sir Joh, and share this story with the world.

Gold was found in Maryborough in 1853, and a huge goldrush followed.  
This song has an interesting history.  
There are different versions. 
In Banjo Paterson’s ‘Old Bush Songs’ (1905), (https://www.gutenberg.org/files/10493/10493-h/10493-h.htm)  it appears as ‘The Murrumbidgee Shearer’,  which, I quote below :

THE MURRUMBIDGEE SHEARER
Come, all you jolly natives, and I’ll relate to you
Some of my observations—adventures, too, a few.
I’ve travelled about the country for miles, full many a score,
And oft-times would have hungered, but for the cheek I bore.

I’ve coasted on the Barwon—low down the Darling, too,
I’ve been on the Murrumbidgee, and out on the Paroo;
I’ve been on all the diggings, boys, from famous Ballarat;
I’ve loafed upon the Lachlan and fossicked Lambing Flat.

I went up to a squatter, and asked him for a feed,
But the knowledge of my hunger was swallowed by his   greed.
He said I was a loafer and for work had no desire,
And so, to do him justice, I set his shed on fire.

Oh, yes, I’ve touched the shepherd’s hut, of sugar, tea, and flour;
And a tender bit of mutton I always could devour.
I went up to a station, and there I got a job;

A-glistening in my flipper, chaps, a patent pill machine.

I’ve been hunted like a panther into my mountain lair.
Anxiety and misery my grim companions there.
I’ve planted in the scrub, my boys, and fed on kangaroo,
And wound up my avocations by ten years on Cockatoo.

So you can understand, my boys, just from this little rhyme,
I’m a Murrumbidgee shearer, and one of the good old time.

The Jolly Puddlers (Charles Thatcher)

A radio documentary about the Kangaroo dog - a unique Australian dog with a big story.

Born in the early Sydney colony between 1788 and 1803, this deerhound-greyhound mongrel dog was bred to hunt and kill kangaroos.

The kangaroo dog was there at key moments in Australia's colonial past - from hunting dog that fed the colony, to bushrangers best mate - to battle dog in the Frontier wars, and family member. The kangaroo dog has seen a lot.
