About the Podcast: 

Diasporaa was the name of Aditya's startup based in Vancouver, BC. It focused on helping new immigrants in Canada find their feet, get off to a running start and ease their assimilation into Canadian life. A big part of the platform were conversations, community and support. Though the startup stopped growing once Aditya moved to Seattle, WA - it remained alive in the form of several discussion groups and online communities.

Now, Diasporaa has been resurrected in the form of a podcast focused on sharing interesting immigrant stories from the South Asian diaspora and uncovering how much we have in common despite our differences. Aditya is a Bombay boy who has lived in Austin, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Vancouver before making it to his current home in Seattle. He has degrees in marketing, urban planning, real estate and strategy but has spent his career in financial services, social media and now real estate - mostly as an entrepreneur and partly as an employee at Amazon.

He balances Indian, Canadian and American culture, loves helping those who are new to North America and looks forward to the interesting stories that his interview guests bring each week. This week, deep inside the Lone Star State, a disturbing trend is gaining momentum: tech firms, racing to support fast-growing AI data centers, are turning their backs on renewable energy pledges and embracing fossil fuels once again. Companies are quietly installing natural-gas-powered turbines—effectively building their own private power plants—to meet the immense electrical demands of generative AI infrastructure.

At face value, it's a straightforward story: Texas's electrical grid is strained, its capacity limited. ERCOT—the state's electricity council—recently required large power users, including AI data centers, to handle their increasing demand off-grid by generating their own electricity. And in response, companies like CloudBurst Data Centers have answered this challenge—but at a cost we're only beginning to understand.

Gas turbine facilities—such as CloudBurst’s massive 1.2-gigawatt plant, capable of powering an entire Texas city—are cropping up rapidly. They're massive, dirty energy plants, designed chiefly by gas giants like Energy Transfer. The growth is startling: more than twelve gigawatts of natural gas generation has been announced this year alone for behind-the-meter AI data centers across Texas—a step backward in the long push toward renewable power.

But here's the critical tension beneath this story: on stage, these tech firms proudly publicize their ambitious renewable plans. Green logos, headlines touting clean energy commitments, and promises of eventual shifts to green hydrogen dominate their public discourse. Yet today, they're quietly signing decade-long fossil fuel commitments that lock in tremendous carbon emissions—justified, they say, by the need for immediate, reliable power.

"This is the new reality of the AI age," executives quietly acknowledge behind closed doors. But this “new reality” drives up local pollution, increases carbon emissions dramatically, and undermines global climate goals, according to environmental experts and frustrated residents. One local activist summed it up bluntly: “They'll destroy our communities—dark skies, quiet neighborhoods, clean air—all gone, in the name of AI.”
