NEW WILMINGTON, PA – In this short podcast, I send you a short audio postcard from Westminster College’s Field Station Trails. I begin next to Brittain Lake, walking through an open field, trekking the various trails, and finally, finding the field station at the end. Along the way I note various beautiful aspects of the adventure and reflect on both the serenity and distinctness of the natural world.

On a cold, early fall day, I could hear crickets chirping and geese squawking, along with the crunch of the leaves beneath my feet. With the harsh air pushing against my chest and chilling my lungs, I can tell that fall is in the air. It’s a bright and sunny day so I note the blinding flashes of the sun through the trees and the reflection of the light against the ripples of the water.

On the path, my footsteps, the crunching of leaves, the sound of crickets, and the harsh wind fill the ambience and background. I avoid obstacles such as hills and tree limbs while I traverse the trails. The variation of the ground gives me variety to the experience as a soft, grassy carpet accompanied me some of the way, with boarded, wood paths and sections of rocky and rough paths towards the end of the hike. Finally, I note a harsh line between the bright green grass of summer and the dead, brown leaves of fall. As a sign of the times, I leave the listener with the energy to explore.
