This Trace was inspired by the presence of Boston Common's Central Burying Ground. It contains sampled fragments from recordings of the choral work of American composer William Billings (1746-1800), whose remains are buried here in an unmarked grave. (Note: you can enter the cemetery via the gate on Boylston and walk around)

Original music by Christina Campanella (sampling, keys, synth) and Mark Spencer (electric and bass guitars, kalimba, harmonica, percussion).

TRACES 1 - We Wept

This Trace hovers around Freedom Plaza and large bronze sculpture "The Embrace," by artist Hank Willis Thomas' and MASS Design Group, a monument to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King’s love, and their approach to an equitable society. This musical composition contains fragments of King's 1965 speech given at the Parkman Bandstand.

This Trace accompanies your walk around Liberty Mall, the Brewer Fountain, and Children's Playground. It offers the opportunity to wander without a goal, take in things that are normally unnoticed, and simply listen. TRACES 4 - In Passing

This Trace is in the air around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Frog Pond, Carousel and Parade Ground. It imagines the vast network of human voices that cradle us in flight. Sampled fragments taken from Logan's Air Traffic Control stream, KBOS.

TRACES 2 - Flight

CHRISTINA CAMPANELLA is a composer, vocalist, and sound artist with a deep history as a performer in theater, film, and opera. Her “moody, driving music”, “hymn-like songs” (New York Times), and “ethereal voice” (BUST Magazine) are the mainspring of her work across disciplines. Fusing songwriting and music composition with aural design, Campanella weaves ambient textures and a dreamy avant-pop sensibility into cinematic soundscapes and deconstructed art songs.

She has created two large scale works for The Great Learning Orchestra (Stockholm) - an improvising orchestra that specializes in concert-installation and premiere performances of graphically notated scores. She is a recipient of Opera America’s Discovery Grant for Female Composers, 3 NYSCA Individual Artist Commissions in Film, Media and New Technologies, a performance grant from Café Royal Cultural Foundation, commissioning from the Swedish Cultural Council, HERE Arts Center and independent curators, funding from the Foundation for Contemporary Art, Anti-Social Music, NY State Music Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New Music USA, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and individual patrons. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Harvestworks, HERE Arts Center, and Whitman College.

Campanella has performed in downtown theater and independent film since 1997, in works created and/or directed by Richard Foreman, Phil Soltanoff, Theodora Skipitares, Jim Findlay, Mallory Catlett and others, and has played keyboards with various NY bands. She has sung works by composers Kitty Brazelton and Nick Brooke, and regularly performs the operas of composer/sound artist Joe Diebes.
