The big question here, then, is whether Volkanovski can have made the adjustments needed to beat a man who outpointed him less than a year ago.

The story of that fight was essentially that Volkanovski was the better technical striker, but he couldn’t really hurt Makhachev badly and ate a lot of heavy shots from the Dagestani in return.

Alexander Volkanovski will step in for Charles Oliveira to face lightweight champion Islam Makhachev for the 155-pound title at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. Oliveira, who fought Makhachev and lost at UFC 280 last year, was severely cut above his eye during training and was forced to pull out of the main event rematch on Oct. 21.

Now, on just 11 days' notice, Volkanovski will get in on the rematch action and attempt to take down Makhachev and become a two-division champion. Volkanovski lost in a five-round thriller to Makhachev at UFC 284 in February 2023.

The striking exchanges in the rematch should be competitive as well, and it would not be surprising to see either fighter do damage on the feet—potentially with fight-ending consequences.

As everyone is well aware, this headliner should initially have seen Islam Makhachev defending his crown against the man he took it from, top contender Charles Oliveira.

The fight in question took place in Volk’s home country of Australia. This time, however, the two meet in the United Arab Emirates, where the crowd is likely to be on the side of the Dagestani fighter.

Another reason why Makhachev’s odds are so short is that he’s had a full camp, which isn’t the case with Volk. Sure, he did prepare for a fight with Charles Oliveira, who’s a bit different fighter than his new opponent.

However, the preparation for his second title defense did turn Makhachev into a real beast – he looks more ripped than he’s ever been.

In the first Makhachev vs. Volkanovski fight, the UFC Lightweight Champ showed that Dagestani wrestling is superior to Aussie wrestling. He did get knocked down by Volk at one point, but he got up. This time, Volkanovski might not be as powerful considering that he hasn’t had a full camp. That said, Makhachev should be able to dominate him throughout the fight. We’re not 100% certain he’s gonna be able to finish Volk, but we are sure he’s going to win.

However, with ‘Do Bronx’ sidelined with an injury, rather than replace him with another top-ranked lightweight, the UFC have instead turned to another familiar foe for the Dagestani.

The orthodox fighter comes into this fight with a mark of 12-0-0. The 29-year-old has an arm span of 75". In the grappling category, Kamaru Usman is able to score a takedown 2.96 times per 15 minutes and Khamzat Chimaev is averaging a takedown 3.98 times per 3 rds.

Still, it's hard not to give Volkanovski a slight edge in this department. The featherweight spends a lot more time striking than Makhachev, who prefers to grapple, and the stats show that he is the more effective fighter in this department.

Islam Makhachev will once again defend his UFC lightweight championship against featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski in a hastily arranged rematch that will serve as main event of UFC 294 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Makhachev was originally booked in a different rematch -- against former lightweight champ Charles Oliveira -- but Oliveira pulled out 11 days before fight night after suffering a bad cut in training. The UFC scrambled to put together Makhachev-Volkanovski 2, which pits the No. 1 and No. 2 fighters in the ESPN men's MMA pound-for-pound rankings.

The main card at Etihad Arena will be on ESPN+ pay-per-view starting at 2 p.m. ET, with prelims on ESPN+ at 10 a.m.
