Overture for Overture: Amongst other reasons, the French spelling of Ouverture is employed in order to foreground its connotation with "opening" (ouvert-ure) in a more literal sense. Such a reading invokes a negative space in a continuity, a parting of the curtain, a rupturing moment in which resides any and all hope for a unity beyond that which separates. 

Widerklang is torn from another 'prologue to a prologue,' the dedication from Goethe’s Faust, the opening lines of which serve as an epigraph for Ouverture—"Widerklang:" “Ihr naht euch wieder,
schwankende Gestalten / Die früh sich einst dem trüben Blick gezeigt.” [You once again draw near, wavering forms / who first appeared before too-clouded eyes.] Meaning to “resound” or “echo,” Widerklang suggests a sound familiar to us, repeated and yet wholly changed in its form. It is further an homage to the Eco Ensemble, for whom the work was written.

My first official mixtape from 1996.  I had made other mixes prior but this was the first one with artwork (Thanks Eli!).  This was before the time of camera phones and easy access to pics so the DJ on the cover is actually DJ Apollo lol.  I think we lifted it from a magazine and just blurred it a little.  Shout out to Casa Joaquin and their Photoshop 4.0 equipped computer lab.  Unfortunately the B-side didn't survive on my copy.  If I can locate a better version I'll post but for now the A-side finally wins??

"Wait For Fire Burning"

Formed in Oakland in 1985, Legal Reins were comprised of singer/guitarist Danny Benatar, bassist Eden Unger and drummer Tim Freund. They tore up the Bay Area scene, playing show after show and cementing themselves as one of the best live bands around. This is a band who did the work, got in the reps and eclipsed the Gladwellian idea of 10,000 hours. Opening for everyone from Madness to Killing Joke, Legal Reins proved themselves time and again that they could step on any stage and match anyone in terms of power and heart. Their exhilarating blend of sweeping pop epics and punchy hook laden rock and roll brought to mind everyone from The Sound to Echo and the Bunnymen to the Waterboys. After a bit of a bidding war, they signed to Arista in 1987, put out their debut album Please, The Pleasure soon after and then? Well, then things turned the other way. I'm going to let Tim tell you the story, but let me say this: In 1986 I was the music director of KVHS, an all-metal station located conveniently on my high school campus. I was in the habit of sneaking in The Smiths and The Chameleons in between Accept and Venom just to see if anyone noticed--they did, by the way. It was slightly terrifying to be 16 and getting death threats for not playing King Diamond, but I digress. Legal Reins called me up and they were very kind and I loved their music and one time I played them in between Y&T and Armored Saint and this one guy called up and said, very aggressively, Who was that you played after Y&T? I told him Legal Reins and he was quiet for second and then he said, That was pretty good...

Everyone has opinions on the Bay Area’s problems with housing, transit and public infrastructure, but Darrell Owens digs deep into the historical roots of these issues on his Substack “The Discourse Lounge.” When Darrell is analyzing a topic like gentrification, he doesn’t just start in the 1990s or 2000. He’ll go back more than a century, because, yes, the origins of our current demographic trends really do stretch that far. He also knows how to grab readers’ attention with headlines like “Why new apartments look ugly” and “Bay Area nightlife sucks – here’s how to fix it.”

In addition to his writing, Darrell has been active with numerous “hands on” projects – from restoring long lost street neighborhood landmarks to installing “guerilla” bus benches at AC Transit stops lacking adequate seating. In this episode, Darrell and I discuss the origins of Nimby and Yimbyism, establishing criteria for historical preservation, the history of public housing, and much more.

If you were born after 1990, it might be easy to think that the world has always had wheelchair ramps, closed captions, and bathroom stalls for people with disabilities. But none of those things existed until a few decades ago - and they all had to be demanded. Until a group of confrontational activists emerged out of Berkeley in the 1960s, it was legal to discriminate against people with disabilities. All that changed thanks to the radical students who built one of the most successful movements of the 20th century.

Today’s episode features my interview with Scot Danforth, the author of “An Independent Man: Ed Roberts and the Fight for Disability Rights” (UC Press). Listen now to hear about how a man who couldn’t move his arms or legs changed laws, architecture, and society’s view on people with disabilities.

George Papajohn (b. 1998 Milwaukee) is a composer, improvisor, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His recent work engages with latent tensions of identity held within the material, historical, and phenomenological aspects of sound. 

His music has been performed by Ensemble Dal Niente, the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble, and by frequent collaborators Cameron Roberts and Julia Ansolabehere. George earned his B.M. in music composition at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music where he studied with Alex Mincek, Hans Thomalla, and Jay Alan Yim. He is currently pursuing a PhD in music composition at the University of California, Berkeley.
