In light of my latest series on the UN Ocean Conference, I am sharing here big positive news that flooded my feed in September.

First, the High Seas Treaty, also known as BBNJ: the Treaty for the Protection and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction. This international agreement that aims to better protect the ocean that is outside of national boundaries, (2/3rd of the Ocean) received the 60 ratifications to become law.

Second, the World Trade Organization's Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies also entered into force. This ensures a pathway for all WTO members to roll back harmful fisheries subsidies in order to restore ocean health.

Colette Pichon Battle, a generational native of Bayou Liberty, Louisiana, is an award-winning lawyer and prominent climate justice organizer. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when Black and Indigenous communities were largely left out of federal recovery systems, Colette led the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy (GCCLP) to provide relief and legal assistance to Gulf South communities of color. 
			
Justin Winters is the co-founder and Executive Director of One Earth [http://oneearth.org/], a nonprofit organization that works to prove that we can solve the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss through three pillars of collective action: renewable energy, nature conservation, and regenerative agriculture. One Earth generates educational content, inspiring storytelling, and innovative digital tools to equip people to drive change across Earth’s 185 Bioregions. Prior to One Earth, Justin served as Executive Director of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, where she built the organization’s grant-making program that awarded over $100 million in grants across 60 countries, and grew its digital media community to 80 million followers.

The Role of a Ditch in the Matrix

Whether your outdoor space is a large garden or a tiny apartment balcony, you can plant plants that are native to your part of the world. For those with lawns, you can reduce or eliminate the lawn and replace those areas with native plants. The result would be a greater sequestration of carbon by those plants, and increased support for all forms of life, including birds, insects, pollinators and other animals. Another benefit is we would use less water, and our water would be protected from pollution from fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides which are widely used to maintain lawns and non-native plants.

Doug Tallamy is co-founder of the Homegrown National Park, a nationwide project that encourages everyone to plant natives and eliminate, or at least reduce, lawn areas. You can be part of this project and in the process become a conservationist, and part of the solution to climate change.

Conserving land, waters and seas without compromising Indigenous people's food and knowledge systems

A changing climate with hotter and drier weather is a challenge for people, but also for lakes, reservoirs and rivers. The Rio Grande river, which runs from Colorado into Mexico, crossing several U.S. states, continues to shrink and to run dry in places where it used to flow. 

Most of the water from the river is used to grow crops like alfalfa and hay to feed livestock, Other crops are cotton and pecans; some water is used for power generation and some for municipal water use. But the river can no longer provide enough water for all those uses. The World Wildlife Fund has made it their mission to revitalize the river. It’s a daunting task, one faced by my guest, Enrique Prunes, Rio Grande Manager and Freshwater Lead Specialist at World Wildlife Fund US.

The European Union has 160 million hectares of forests, which corresponds to 40 per cent of its territory. Forests are an economic and ecological wealth that are directly impacted by many threats: global warming, parasites, diseases, storms and of course, fires. It is impossible to ignore the devastating fires that ravage the forests of southern Europe every summer. How are European forests doing today? How can they be protected and repaired?

In the 63rd episode of Food for Europe we take you to Portugal, where Jorge Brito, executive secretary of the Coimbra region, looks back at the measures put in place to regenerate the forest ravaged by deadly fires in 2017 and ensure the protection of the population. Pierre Hermans, forester and founder of the private firm Sylva Nova, explains how he integrates global warming into the solutions he offers to his clients across Europe. Finally, Jérémie Crespin, policy officer at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, a specialist in forests, discusses the state of European forests and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy to prevent forest fires.

Conservation: Love of Nature in Action

In 2025, Beaty Museum curator Ildiko Szabo discovered a record of several bird specimens collected by ecologist Ian Efford on Easter Island in 1965. In this podcast, Szabo and host Morrison Tulloch trace the provenance of these specimens, uncovering the story of Efford’s journey aboard the HMCS Cape Scott during the 1965 Medical Expedition to Easter Island (METEI). This story relies heavily on Jacalyn M. Duffin’s book Stanley’s Dream: The Medical Expedition to Easter Island, as well as Efford’s own documentation of the trip, including correspondence, magazine clippings, newsletters, personnel lists, and reports preserved in UBC’s Special Collections.
