The depths of the oceans are the least known places on Earth for humans. It's even said that we have a better understanding of the surface of the moon than the depths of our own oceans. Despite this, we have already begun our usual endeavor of destruction there as well, in the name of oil and money.

Nevertheless, for this piece, I envisioned a musician with his guitar, composing his work underwater, sheltered from the constant noise of our civilization. It's the only way he could find to escape the paralysis of his creative mind.

I finally made a track with the Chase Bliss Blooper that I kind of like. No fault on the Blooper, tho, it's a great kit. Just took my mind some wiring to understand it.

Dear Casey,

You don’t know me, but I’ve spent half my life with your voice in my ear. From growing up in the middle of nowhere Arkansas—where I learned that the only thing worse than a slow harvest was that unfortunate run-in with the tractor—I’d tune in every week just to escape to the world of the Top 40. Then, there was that one unforgettable summer at Camp Wetmore, where I caught a pneumonia so bad they almost named it after me, and your countdowns kept my spirits up as I lay on that creaky camp cot.

By the time I turned 18, I thought I’d been through it all…until Uncle Sam came calling and I found myself drafted. I didn’t know what was scarier: boot camp or the fact that I’d be without your Sunday countdowns. But somehow, through it all, your voice kept finding me on those distant airwaves, reminding me that maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.

Now, I make beats myself, but it’s all because of you, Casey. I created a track called “Aircheck” as a tribute to those golden radio days, and to the times you got me through every scrape and mishap. It’s dedicated to the man who made even the hardest times a little lighter.

So here’s my Long Distance Dedication to you, Casey—the voice that pulled me through farm accidents, camp fevers, and even the draft. Keep those hits rolling and those stories coming. Thanks for everything.

Jonathan Zorn works as a composer, performer, and curator of experimental, electronic, and improvised music. His electronic music pairs improvising musicians with interactive computer systems to create hybrid, human-machine ensembles. Zorn's interest in vocal utterance has resulted in a series of pieces in which spoken language is interrupted by electronic forces, drawing attention to the gap between speech and sound. Zorn has been active as an improvisor on bass and electronics for 15 years and has performed at Red Cat, the Walker Art Center, the Verona Jazz Festival, the Library of Congress, the Seattle Festival of Improvised Music, Line Space Line Festival, and the Chelsea Art Museum.
