THE STORY (COVER)

Portland's Kyleen King, known as the musician's musician, is a professional instrumentalist and vocalist who brings nuance, wisdom, humor, and musical excellence to all her endeavors. Whether she's working as a session musician, string arranger, composer, teacher, or live performer (most notably as a touring musician with multi-Grammy-Award winner Brandi Carlile and her “Bramily,”) Kyleen gives 100% of her grounded energy and mindfulness to each facet of her musical multiverse. Now, Kyleen is embarking on an ambitious journey to get a masters in social work, so that she can help fellow musicians with their (usually under-addressed) mental and physical health issues: Kyleen knows all about the struggle musicians encounter just trying to meet basic needs, to manage substance use, creative burnout, and abuse in the music industry. This mission is not only important, it is vital to the health and well-being of our musical community, which has suffered in big ways during the pandemic and beyond. I've taken my mental health head on over the last five years. Five years ago was rough. Really rough. The journey. Tough. Really tough. 

And so am I! I am here. I am alive and I am happy to be.

My wife is my rock. She gets me unlike anyone else. I can be me and anything else. She has stood right by my side through my battle with mental illness. At times I'm sure I appeared to not care about really anything. At times I talked really bad about myself. At times I was a hard person to live with I'm sure. At times I seemed very self absorbed. 

She stood right there. That is a level of comfort, a safe place, that is always right there. Loving me even when I'm angry.

Kimberlye Gold is a San Francisco Bay Area singer/songwriter who spent many years honing her skills living and working in the trenches of LA/NYC/Nashville, working with hitmakers from all those major music towns before returning to her roots. Her love for multiple genres of music spanning decades is on full display in her combo platter of pop/rock/R&B/country original and cover tunes. Kimberlye's stable of top-notch players includes members of luminary bands such as Tower Of Power, Steely Dan, and Boz Scaggs, joining her on everything from duo gigs to headlining on main stages with her bands Kimberlye Gold's Rock'n'Soul All-Stars and The KGB Kimberlye Gold Band. 

Gold is often compared to Grammy winning and Inductee hall of fame artists such as Carly Simon, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, and Bonnie Raitt. A recent moment in her career compares to that of Bonnie Raitt and John Prine’s relationship as her cover of “How Can I Be Sure” by The Rascals has sparked a relationship with Felix Cavaliere, a supporter of the cover.

After a long hiatus since her last album, “Sycamore Street”, she released an EP titled SOLILOQUY with contributions from members of Tower Of Power, Pacific Mambo Orchestra, and produced by Jimmy Goings. It has garnered her reviews of being a “singer/songwriter of the finest tradition” and “***an inventive musician and composer of melodies”.

Music and mental health go hand and hand together. Music can influence my mental health and my mental health can influence the music I listen to and play. 

Life needs to be more playful. We don’t always have time for this in the path of life, but I feel strongly that we have to make room for play, whatever that may look like for your life.

Dare to be weird! Do you. Do what makes you happy and don't let what you think others might think stop you from trying! 

I play all the instruments you will hear. What I play I do try to tell an aspect of my mental health/illness story with  each song whether it be original or a cover. 

We need to normalize talking about our mental health. We need to normalize it being ok to ask for help if we need it. I know I’m glad I finally did. It has changed my life. A ton of battles fought along the way, as nothing likes to come easy, as you already know. 

We gotta fight. We gotta keep pushing forward. The good is still there and you can and will find it again.
