Inge und ihre Geschwister werden in die Aktivitäten der Hitlerjugend und des Bund Deutscher Mädchen hineingezogen und erleben eine merkwürdige Mischung aus Kameradschaft, neuen Verantwortlichkeiten und subtiler Indoktrination.

Die Unschuld der Kinderspiele und -erkundungen weicht einer strukturierteren und ideologischen Umgebung. Inge steht im inneren Konflikt, während sie mit der Disharmonie zwischen den Werten, die ihre Familie ihr vermittelt hat, und den immer rigideren Erwartungen des Regimes kämpft.

Das Buch zeigt die subtilen Wege, wie gewöhnliche Menschen in die Maschinerie eines totalitären Systems gezogen werden. Die Musik für Buch 2 spiegelt diesen internen und externen Konflikt wider und drückt den emotionalen Tumult einer Nation am Rande des Krieges sowie einer Familie aus, die versucht, ihre Werte angesichts überwältigender Veränderungen zu bewahren.

Ignorant of the Egyptian (Coptic) language for the most part, the Arabs confused the Egyptian new year's celebrations, which the Egyptians called the feast of Ni-Yarouou (the feast of the rivers), with the Persian feast of Nowruz.
