We're pleased to bring you another season of The Overhead, and we begin by checking back on a topic we've been tracking from the start: community land trusts.

This time, we're focusing specifically on the "community" aspect of land trusts. We've spoken about the benefits of removing certain land from the market, preserving it as affordable housing in perpetuity. But how do land trusts help longstanding cultural communities so they can continue to call their neigbourhoods home?

We see different communities turning to land trust model as a way to avoid displacement, or reassert cultural ownership over land they've traditionally called home: in the traditionally Black neighbourhoods of Hogan's Alley in Vancouver and Africville in Halifax, or in Toronto's Chinatown.

To answer this, we spoke to Nat Pace, network director of the Canadian Network of Community Land Trusts, and Chiyi Tam, managing director of the Toronto Chinatown Land Trust. As Tam puts it, when we talk about the heritage of a place, we spend a lot of time speaking about the buildings or the character. We lose sight of what really makes a place:

"Heritage is the people, it's not the buildings. And affordability is a core function to do heritage preservation work, in and amongst all of our communities — whether that's dragon dancing or whether that's the literal existence of Africville."

Upper Noons Creek Drive is a busy commuter path and the site of Mountain Meadows Elementary School, and the City of Port Moody is weighing its options to make the stretch of road safer for students, residents of the neighbourhood, and everyone who travels the route.

The Upper Noons Creek Drive Traffic Calming Study will assess traffic conditions along the road, especially in front of Mountain Meadows Elementary School, aiming to recommend changes that will reduce speeding and other unsafe behaviours; encourage neighbourhood residents to walk or use other active transportation methods; and improve the stretch of road’s the safety, comfort, and accessibility.

The City of Port Moody held a pop-up event on Tuesday, November 5th to share information and gather feedback from residents and users of Upper Noons Creek Drive. Nobinur Rahman, Transportation Engineer, and Jeff Moi, General Manager of Engineering and Operations with Port Moody, welcomed the in-person feedback and urged anyone who uses Upper Noons Creek Drive to fill out an online survey and share their thoughts at Engage.PortMoody.ca

Port Moody Seeks Community Input for Traffic Calming Project

Larry Ostola talks to Barry Gough about his book, The Curious Passage of Richard Blanshard: First Governor of Vancouver Island.
This biography by historian Barry Gough focuses on Richard Blanshard, the first governor of Vancouver Island, and explores the early days of Canada's westernmost province. Blanshard arrived on Vancouver Island in 1850, after a long sea voyage, to begin his short and troubled tenure as governor. His time in office, lasting only three years, was marked by conflict with the powerful Hudson’s Bay Company and its leader, James Douglas, who succeeded him as governor. Despite his pivotal role in alerting London to American threats, Blanshard's tenure was unsuccessful, overshadowed by political and cultural challenges. His story sheds light on the struggles of early colonial governance, the influence of commerce, and the clash of European and Pacific Northwest cultures.

Barry Gough is one of Canada’s premier historians and biographers. His insightful research and lucid writing spanning five decades have earned him high distinction. Among his awards are the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio Prize, the Maritime Foundation’s Mountbatten Award, the Washington Historical Society’s Robert Gray Medal, the Alcala Galiano Medal and the Keith Matthews Award. In 2022, he was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing for Possessing Meares Island. He is a Fellow of the Society for the History of Discoveries.
