This summer I took a trip to Japan and was shocked to discover mallsoft-esque music still played in stores during closing times in department stores (at least in the cities I traveled). On my way back from a countryside festival in Aichi, I stopped into a nearly empty grocery store to pick up souvenirs, and of all things I heard the vaporwave sample classic (and staple of my childhood home) "I'll be Dreamin" by Vanessa Williams playing as I began to make my way out.

There was a big Heisei revival this summer, and it was incredibly strange to see memories of my childhood everywhere I turned while extremely jet-lagged and sleep deprived. I was there studying music and was invited to compose a retro-style video game score/sfx for a student project - a butterfly effect that would've never happened if I hadn't gotten into synthesizers and retro anime/VGM scores from bootlegging old Japanese video games as a kid - and then later vaporwave and future funk from browsing corners of the internet.

I sampled my own ambient recordings I took while walking around the store, and manipulated it to reflect how strange this full-circle moment and fever dream of a trip this was. I compose scores/SFX for game and animations along with my producing/Djing and plan to post here or on bandcamp sometime soon. (Other fever dream moments included climbing Fushimi Inari at sunset and finally reaching the top around midnight (1?) where there was one strange, spiritual experience after the other, getting an actual fever during a rural area day-trip from wandering Tokyo streets too many late nights in a row, and going in and out of consciousness on the plane ride back after stubbornly eating three different fancy bakery cakes despite knowing it would absolutely make me feel worse)
