Cities across the US are rethinking streets, going beyond sidewalks and bike lanes to welcome nonmotorists to share the roadway. David L. Prytherch traces the historical evolution of America’s streets and explores contemporary movements to retake them from cars for diverse forms of mobility and community life. Can we design more just streets? Here, Pryterch gets into it with Mimi Sheller and Peter Norton.



David Prytherch is professor of geography at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is author of Reclaiming the Road: Mobility Justice beyond Complete Streets; Law, Engineering, and the American Right-of-Way: Imagining a More Just Street; and coeditor of Transport, Mobility, and the Production of Urban Space. 

Mimi Sheller is Dean of The Global School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Sheller is founding co-editor of the journal Mobilities, founding co-director of the Centre for Mobilities at Lancaster University, England, and past president of the International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility. Sheller is author of Mobility Justice: The Politics of Movement in an Age of Extremes.

Peter Norton is associate professor of history in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia. He is author of Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City and Autonorama: The Illustory Promise of High-Tech Driving.

For Boston, Summer 2026 is set to be one of the busiest seasons in recent history. Next year, Massachusetts will host seven FIFA World Cup matches while simultaneously celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation alongside visitors from around the world. With hundreds of thousands of people anticipated to be visiting the region for these events, the MBTA needed a solid plan to keep riders and visitors moving. On this episode of Spilling the T, we’re joined by Erika Mazza, Senior Advisor for Special Projects at the MBTA. First Group’s profits vanish without drivers – the exploiters can’t do without workers, but the workers could do fine without an exploiting class! First Group’s operating profits reached £204.3m in 2024, and shareholder dividends increased by 45 percent. These profits, created by milking drivers and passengers alike, weren’t invested in new buses or better wages. They were pocketed by parasitic shareholders who have zero accountability to the hundreds of thousands of workers relying on functional public transport.

Bus drivers need decent pay passengers need a decent service!

En Bucaramanga, el transporte público atraviesa un momento de transformación. Con la reducción del funcionamiento del sistema Metrolínea, la llegada de nuevos buses a la ciudad representa no solo una inversión importante, sino también una esperanza que mejorará la movilidad y la calidad del servicio que diariamente utilizamos miles de ciudadanos. Este proyecto ha despertado el interés y la curiosidad de la comunidad, que busca entender qué hay detrás de esta iniciativa, cuáles son los beneficios reales y cómo se integrará con las dinámicas actuales de transporte.

Por eso, en este episodio profundizaremos en este tema. Sin duda, debe ser considerado uno de los asuntos más importantes de interés público, pues impacta directamente la vida urbana, el medioambiente y la economía local. Para conocer acerca de los detalles y la decisión detrás de este cambio, contamos con la participación del gerente de Metrolínea, Emiro Castro, principal líder de este proceso y voz autorizada para explicar en qué consiste esta nueva etapa para Bucaramanga.

Con él hablaremos sobre la inversión, los retos, los costos y los impactos que tendrá esta implementación. Para empezar, Emiro agradece la invitación y destaca el interés del curso de la UNAB en la recuperación del sistema de transporte masivo del área metropolitana de Bucaramanga.

Ante la pregunta sobre el origen de la iniciativa, explica que no surgió específicamente de traer vehículos desde Medellín, sino de encontrar disponibilidad de una flota que funcionara con gas natural vehicular, mejorara la eficiencia energética y fuera compatible con el sistema BRT actual, diseñado desde 2007. Esta búsqueda responde a la necesidad de fortalecer el servicio en una etapa de transición mientras se estructura el nuevo sistema de transporte masivo.

En cuanto a los criterios para seleccionar estos buses, se eligieron porque pertenecen a la modalidad BRT, tienen capacidad para más de 80 pasajeros, cuentan con puertas izquierda y derecha, y cumplen con la política pública de transporte definida para el área metropolitana desde 2003.

Sobre la logística, Emiro detalla que estos vehículos no son fáciles de conseguir debido a su alta demanda. Se buscó flota disponible en diferentes ciudades, y finalmente se encontró una opción adecuada en la empresa Transportes Medellín Castilla, que contaba con buses Scania casi nuevos. Tras su revisión y alistamiento técnico, fueron trasladados a Bucaramanga. La primera fase del plan contempla 12 vehículos, uno en reserva y 11 en operación.

Respecto a la financiación, explica que el municipio de Bucaramanga aportó inicialmente 4.300 millones de pesos para garantizar la operación hasta el 31 de diciembre. Este dinero cubre el arrendamiento de los buses, su mantenimiento, la contratación de conductores, el combustible y el sistema tecnológico de control y recaudo. Hasta ahora, no ha habido aportes del gobierno nacional ni de otros municipios del área. Este modelo se controla mediante una fiducia que solo permite usar los recursos para esos cuatro rubros, con doble verificación entre Metrolínea y el Área Metropolitana.
