Lovejoy have a reputation for creating sophisticated indie music. In the late nineties and early noughties, they released a string of well received and now sought-after 7”singles, EPs and albums, also playing shows in the UK, across Europe and Scandinavia, until taking an extended break in 2008.
 
In 2024, from seemingly out of nowhere, they made a surprise, warmly received return with their acclaimed album ‘…And It’s Love!’. Released jointly by Spinout Nuggets and Shelflife Records. ‘…And It’s Love!’ received glowing reviews and 2024 saw Lovejoy’s Dick Preece’s live return too, performing songs acoustically in support of the album. 
 
Music legend Alan McGee has been a firm supporter of Lovejoy, also providing sleeve notes for ‘…And It’s Love!’ (Ed Ball too).
 
After the album’s release, he and Dick Preece collaborated on the recording of lost Biff Bang Pow! song, ‘Let There Be Love’. The story goes that, while reviewing material for Cherry Red’s 2022 BBP! retrospective, ‘A Better Life’, McGee came across a live recording of the long-forgotten song: “It’s one of the 3 or 4 best songs I ever wrote for Biff Bang Pow! We played it a few times live and I can’t believe we never recorded it at the time. But things were chaotic and so were we. In all the madness, we just forgot…”, said McGee. 
 
The live recording was too rough to be released, but McGee suggested to Preece that Lovejoy should record it. ‘Talk about pressure to get it right” says Preece, “…what a responsibility. But we played the song through together, talked about what it needed, swapped ideas and gradually both versions came together. When Spinout Nuggets and Creation Youth (McGee’s new record label) agreed to co-release the songs as a 7”single, I was just so thrilled”.
 
‘Let There Be Love’ is an epic, defiant song of love and longing, beautifully meshing McGee’s melodic dexterity with Lovejoy’s measured elegance. A tender acoustic take shimmers with beauty and Felt like ethereal guitar, while the electric version recalls the darker, intense  Biff Bang Pow! sound circa ‘Love is Forever’. It’s a must for fans of Lovejoy, Biff Bang Pow! and all related records.
 
Released as a double ‘a’ side single by Spinout Nuggets and Creation Youth, the vinyl is limited to 500 copies worldwide.

MAGIC SEAS the Essex based indie/alternative duo are set to release their new single,  ‘Can You Hear My Dreams?’ via their own Lemonpop Recs with digital distribution by Shellshock on 17th October.  

‘Can You Hear My Dreams?’ follows the singles, ‘From This View’ and ‘The Sun Chair’ all lifted from the duo’s 3rd LP FROM THIS VIEW which was released in April.  

MAGIC SEAS hail from Chelmsford, Essex and are brothers James and John Prudence.  They make lush, resplendent indie tinged dream pop that draws on the likes of Galaxie 500, Beach House, The War On Drugs, Felt, Cocteau Twins, The Byrds, Echo And The Bunnymen and Slowdive.  On their third album, FROM THIS VIEW they explore the sense of space and wonder within their sound mixing west-coast Americana influenced acoustic guitar and harmonies with reverb drenched C86-esque 12 string guitars and driving drum machine.  Influential blog Even Butterflies Make A Sound commented, ‘From This View’s chiming guitars and washes of shimmering keyboards offer nine cuts of soaring soundscapes for the Magic Seas’ tales of solitude and sorrow.Among the highlights are the title track with its driving drumbeats. ‘Different Ways’ adds harmonica to the mix giving the song a twist of Bob Dylan’s wild mercury sound. ‘Strings And Time’ offers a more acoustic sound to the proceedings to give it a more grounded folky flavour. ‘The Happiness Key’ sails this album off into the sunset with a hypnotic motif. It brings to mind Spacemen 3 during their Perfect Prescription era or Slowdive’s first phase.’ 
FROM THIS VIEW was again recorded with RIDE frontman Mark Gardener who upon hearing the band’s first demo has since been producing them at his OX4 Sound studio in Oxford.  In autumn ‘23 James and John were invited to Nashville to play as session players at WELCOME TO 1979 AGAIN, an all analogue recording studio in an old pressing plant. 

Of the new single John says, “The imagery of the song reflects quite a few aspects of what we do musically, whilst also trying to embrace the listener. It’s exploring a realisation that you are suddenly in an incredible moment that you have been anticipating and you can share its glow with others. Meet us tonight under golden light.”  Of their evocative band name, singer James says, “The idea behind the name MAGIC SEAS was to take people to places within our music.” 
MAGIC SEAS have played tour support with the likes of REVEREND AND THE MAKERS, THE WARLOCKS, REPUBLICA, THE ASTERIOD No.4 and LEVITATION ROOM, and following on from a National Album Day endorsed Ltd 12” release they have also performed live at in store performances for HMV, Flashback Records and for the last two years played live on Record Store Day at Intense Records, Chelmsford.
