Evan Oddleifson speaks with Helen Cheung about her recently published book, "Mercantile Mobility: Chinese Merchants in Western Canada", and exhibition at the Bruce Peel Special Collections at the University of Alberta. 

Written by Helen Kwan Yee Cheung, designed by Kevin Zak, and edited by Cheryl Cundell, the Mercantile Mobility catalogue won two Awards of Excellence–in both the book and exhibition catalogue categories–as well as Honorable Mention in the categories of cover design for both books and exhibition catalogues, a quadfecta in the annual UCDA Design Competition (Atlanta, Georgia, 2023) from the University & College Designers Association.

Julie Lawson is the award-winning author of many books for young people. Her three novels for Dear Canada have been acclaimed by readers of all ages. No Safe Harbour, also about the Halifax Explosion, won the Hackmatack Award. Julie has a personal connection with the tragic event and writing this novel allowed Julie to delve into the history behind many of the stories she’d heard as a child. Julie lives in Victoria, BC.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: 
Lara Jean Okihiro is a writer, researcher, and educator of mixed Japanese Canadian heritage living in Toronto. Intrigued by the power and magic of stories, she earned a Master’s (Goldsmiths College) and a Doctorate (University of Toronto) in English. Living abroad inspired her to learn about her family’s experience of internment. Lara writes about dispossession, hoarding, social justice, and carrying the important lessons of the past into the future.

Janis Bridger is an educator and writer who has many creative outlets and a love for the outdoors. She lives in Vancouver, Canada, close to where her Japanese Canadian grandparents lived before being interned. Janis earned a diploma in Professional Photography (Langara College), a Bachelor of Education and General Studies (Simon Fraser University) and a Master of Education (University of Alberta), specializing in teacher-librarianship. Social justice, diversity, and kindness are paramount in her life and embedded in her everyday teaching.

The Luminous Life of Lucy Landry

In this powerful and reflective episode of Older & Bolder, Debbie McCulloch is joined by the remarkable Nancy Oliver-Mackenzie, a lifelong educator, historian, and passionate advocate for social justice.

At 83 years old, Nancy continues to break barriers and share stories that matter. She discusses her deep family roots, tracing her lineage back to slavery in the United States, and how that legacy inspired her to research and preserve Black history in Montreal. Her work culminated in a compelling historical exhibit and earned her recognition across Canada—including her recent honour as the City of Montreal’s Black History Month laureate.

Nancy also recounts her vibrant teaching career, which spanned from a fine arts school in Montreal to an Inuit community in Canada’s North, and even across the globe in Africa. Her storytelling is filled with wisdom, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to equity and truth.

From hosting workshops on anti-racism for clergy to reflecting on the day Nelson Mandela visited her community church, Nancy’s insights are a powerful reminder of how one person’s dedication can create ripples of understanding and change.
