During President Biden’s first year in office, his administration published a document titled “The Long-Term Strategy of the United States: Pathways to Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050.” The document says all viable routes to net-zero involve five key transformations. They are: 
•	Decarbonize electricity.
•	Electrify end uses and switch to other clean fuels.
•	Cut energy waste.
•	Reduce methane and other non-CO2 emissions.
•	Scale up CO2 removal.
Which of the key transformations will play the biggest role in reaching the U.S.’s net-zero goal is still up for debate. “The first step—decarbonize electricity—is critical and may be one of the most important steps in achieving net-zero emissions,” Brendan O’Brien, business development manager, and strategy and sales leader with Burns & McDonnell, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “That transition is going to include a lot of things that we’re probably familiar with today, like clean energy driven by solar and wind, but also it’ll look to the future for decarbonized technologies and decarbonized solution.”
O’Brien noted that the U.S. is targeting 100% clean energy by 2035, and he suggested the transition is already well underway. “It’s been occurring and even accelerating in recent years,” he said. “It’s been driven by plummeting costs in key technologies, like solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, and batteries, which you’re seeing more and more as deployed technology of the utilities in the United States. All that’s being bolstered by policies and regulation that has been enacted by various governments. And then also—the final—the big push is really coming from the consumer. More and more consumers are demanding clean energy and clean power, and the power generation market in the United States has been reacting to it.”
Complexity is added to the equation with the second key transformation, that is, electrifying end uses. O’Brien said the transportation sector’s shift from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles will require a 65% increase in power generation. That’s on top of other load growth from manufacturers reshoring operations, as well as the need to replace retiring power generation units, specifically coal plants.
“I think there’s going to be quite a fun challenge of figuring out what the energy mix is going to look like over the next 10 to 25 years to meet these targets,” said Megan Reusser, hydrogen technology manager with Burns & McDonnell, who also participated on the podcast. “What we really need to be looking at is the whole picture,” she said, noting that there are many sectors trying to electrify including industrial applications, agriculture, and forestry, among others. “Transportation is one piece, but when we start putting all the pieces together, it’s going to be large amounts of generation required,” said Reusser.
Meanwhile, cutting energy waste is a no-brainer. Likewise, reducing methane and other non-CO2 emissions follows a similar thought pattern. Lastly, scaling up CO2 capture is important. “We cover a wide range of these different technologies. So, we’re looking at carbon capture and sequestration, whether that is amine technology or membrane technologies—doing a lot of work in the direct air capture, or DAC, markets. So, looking to essentially remove CO2 from the atmosphere that’s already there, and then sequester that with various technologies,” Reusser explained.
In the end, it’s likely an integrated approach will be necessary to reach the U.S.’s net-zero target successfully. “There’s not just going to be a single solution that’s going to get us there. If you dive a little bit more into the U.S. strategy that we were talking about today, it really lays out the groundwork of how to get there. And as you dive into that, you’ll see that it doesn’t just focus on one single industry or one single technology, it’s really across the value chain on how we can accomplish this by working together,” concluded Reusser.

147. Five Key Transformations Required to Achieve Net-Zero in the U.S.

When you think of perennial crops, you may think of fruit or nut trees, not plants like wheat or rice, which are traditionally planted every year. An organization called The Land Institute, based in Salina, Kansas is hoping to change that. They have been at work developing perennial grain and legume crops. 

You may wonder why? Perennial crops have many advantages. They have economic and environmental benefits by requiring less, or no, pesticides and fertilizers, and they can reduce carbon pollution, prevent erosion of the soil and, like trees, hold carbon in the soil.

A newly formed Texan company is attempting to evade New York's fracking ban with a scheme to drill thousands of wells, frack with carbon dioxide, and construct a dozen gas-burning power plants. The company, Southern Tier Solutions, wants to use carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels to extract even more fossil fuels. It's a dangerous example of why carbon capture and sequestration – known as CCS – is a false solution to climate change. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the oil and gas sector is a major contributor to Canada’s economy, employing 182,000 people and generating $209 billion in GDP during 2023, yet it is also the source of 31% of Canada’’s Greenhouse gas emissions.

 “Demand for oil and gas is not going to go to zero tomorrow.  It is a transition that takes decades  to undergo.  There will be a role for oil and gas as we move forward along that transition, but it is likely to be a  cleaner oil and gas sector as the rest of the world stops buying  the oil and gas products that Canada and other countries produce. Which , I think, really underlines the importance of investing in decarbonization now while we're still using oil and gas  to 2050 and a little bit beyond  if we get on a net zero trajectory,” explained Janetta McKenzie  from the Pembina Institute, a Canadian think tank and non-profit focused on energy. 

She was responding to a new report from the Federal Parliamentary Budget Office. 

Janetta McKenzie:  “They were assuming that very little action was taken by oil sands firms in particular, to reduce emissions on site, and therefore they would be choosing to stop producing. Across the sector, there's been a lot of commitments to slashing emissions by 2030. There's billions of dollars on offer through federal and provincial tax incentive and grant programs.  We think there is a path towards choosing to decarbonize, choosing to reduce emissions and not just choosing to shut in production. We think it's a pretty narrow analysis that's based on a very specific set of assumptions that doesn't necessarily reflect the suite of options available to the sector.”

The oil sector has been promoting the idea of carbon capture for years. A group of oil companies put forward a $16.5-billion plan for a massive carbon capture and storage (CCS) network in northern Alberta, but has not implemented it. 

Janetta McKenzie: “We have not seen a lot of movement from the oil sands Pathways Alliance carbon capture project. This was announced several years ago. We simply haven't seen it  move ahead. In the absence of news on that, it's difficult to make the call on whether those big emissions reduction projects  will be implemented anytime soon.”

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, “New regulations to be finalized later this fall will ensure that the sector continues to cut methane emissions by at least 75% from 2012 levels by 2030. Carbon capture is also going to play an increasingly important role  in reducing the emissions from oil and gas production and Canada is well placed to cement its position as a global leader in this critical technology. According to both the IPCC and the International Energy Agency, there's no credible plan to carbon neutrality without carbon management technologies such as carbon capture and storage and their deployment must be rapid and immense, scaling up by nearly 200 times by 2050.”

Janetta McKenzie: “It's difficult to say what is on the docket  for these firms right now. I will say, with the combination of policy, like industrial carbon pricing,  incentives, tax incentives like the carbon capture incentive tax credit from the federal government and provincial grants in particular for carbon capture, but also other emissions reductions technologies plus the possibility of doing a deal with the Canada Growth Fund, the conditions for the last couple of years have been quite good to get a pretty package  to incentivize and encourage the industry  to move forward with these things.”

Somewhat recently, the Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett was forced to finally admit that he was not well-connected to the tech boom to fully profit from that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Younger participants are more attuned to the world into which they have grown and are now currently immersed, giving them a valuable basis to relate to those in the generations of those coming behind us.

However, without the benefit of living history, and, the historical perspectives that might be missed by that younger generation, this forward view alone clearly misses the boat.

Quite often the wisdom of eyes on events long gone must be weaved in to either emphasize, balance, or, at times, dismiss that view entirely.

And, vice versa.

This father and son pair are using their own personal understandings, successes, failures, and, understandings, both mutual and distinctively different, to impart their spin on the news and events of the day.

Many elements flowing through our media streams each and every day are leaving a few loose ends that require a bit of further understanding and crucial context.
